You want a say in the decision, not a task list handed down from a meeting you were not in. You want to open a project and see a blank page, not a template someone half-finished last week. When a client questions the sizing, you want the answer to be yours, backed by numbers you ran and can walk through out loud.

We're looking for an HVAC CAD Designer in Boston, MA.

If that is how you want to spend your day, keep reading.

Why Work With Us

Tech Air is driven by a passion for creating healthier spaces through cutting-edge air systems to enhance environments in schools, hospitals, labs, and beyond. This role is how we bring that work into our own hands. Without a designer in this seat, we stay dependent on drawings handed to us. With one, we sit at the preconstruction table as a design partner.

We are working toward being the contractor of choice for even the most complex jobs by 2035. That goal shows up in the standard we hold the work to. We do it right. We finish the job. We back what we build.

Our core values are not posters on a wall. Adapt and Conquer means when a project shifts, you find the better way. Bring the Heat means you show up ready to give it your all. Build Strong Relationships means the engineer of record, the general contractor, the shop, and the field crew all know your word is good. Own the Process, Own the Outcome means the design has your name on it from the blank page to the final set.

If that reads like a place you would want to show up to, keep going.

Please Don't Apply If

You want a task handed to you already decided.
You go quiet when a room full of people questions your numbers.
You wait for someone else to spot the conflict in your drawing.
You do the work in bursts the night before a deadline.
You send a set out without a second look at the math.
You would rather trace an existing model than build one from nothing.

Our Ideal Applicant

You want the blank page. Sizing, routing, equipment selection, and layout are yours to decide, and that is the part of the job you look forward to.

You take pride in a drawing someone else can build straight from. When the shop opens your set, the answer is in the sheet, not on your phone.

You defend a number to a room that knows enough to push back. You checked it before the meeting. You walk through your logic without getting defensive.

You solve the conflict yourself first. When you cannot, you escalate with a specific ask, not a shrug.

You ask the question on day one when a parameter looks off. Clearing it early beats redoing the work later.

You write down what got agreed to in the meeting and send it back so nobody remembers it differently a month from now.

You keep your work in order. Anyone on the team opens your folder and finds the current version.

You pick up a new system fast and use it without hand-holding.

What You'll Be Responsible For

Designing air systems from a blank page

You start with the airflow and velocities the project calls for. From there, you build the routing, size the ductwork, set the volumes and capacities, and pick the equipment to match the parameters the engineer of record hands you on day one. Nothing gets traced off an existing model.

The finished design holds up when a client questions it, because the numbers behind it are yours and they are defensible.

Turning load calculations into a full air system

Someone else produces the load calculations. You take those completed numbers and turn them into a complete air system in the model. The duct sizing carries the loads. The routing serves the capacities the outputs call for.

A finished calc set always has a matching, buildable design behind it.

Clearing trade conflicts before they reach the field

You coordinate with the electrical, plumbing, and architectural teams inside the model. Multi-trade drawings get reviewed and integrated so the air system fits the space it shares. When a collision shows up, you clear it if it can reasonably be cleared. When it cannot, you escalate to the general contractor with a specific ask.

The field crew installs to a model that already accounts for everyone else in the building.

Producing construction documents the shop can build from

You put out complete construction document sets that the shop and the field build from directly. Every set reflects the final design, the resolved trade coordination, and the sizing decisions behind it.

The people building from your work do not have to re-check the math or chase gaps.

Sitting with the engineer of record and the client through preconstruction

You work directly with the engineer of record and the client through preconstruction. You attend design meetings and help shape the air system before it is locked in. You assist with equipment selection alongside the preconstruction and project management team, and you independently size and lay out systems in partnership with the client.

This includes travel, averaging about one in-person meeting a month. The client leaves those meetings seeing us as a design partner, and the system that comes out of them is one everyone agreed to and can build.

If that reads like the seat you want, hit Apply.

Qualifications

3 to 7 years of HVAC design experience on commercial and industrial projects.
A background in sheet metal design.
Proficient in AutoCAD for air system design and construction document production.
Proficient in Revit for air system modeling. Training is available for the right candidate.
A working command of airflow, capacities, loads, and duct sizing at a level that holds up to client scrutiny.
Experience selecting HVAC equipment against design parameters and project requirements.
Experience coordinating routing and space with the electrical, plumbing, and architectural trades.
Comfortable working directly with an engineer of record and a client through preconstruction.
Able to travel by air for in-person preconstruction meetings, averaging about one trip a month.
Based within 45 to 60 minutes of the Scarborough or Raleigh office, or open to eastern U.S. remote arrangements.

Compensation and Benefits

$90,000 - $120,000 depending on experience.

If you want the blank page, a room that pushes back, and a design with your name on it from start to finish, this is the seat. Hit Apply and let's talk.
