Subject Matter Expert (SME) – Plumbing Program

About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced Plumbing Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support the design, development, review, and validation of a postsecondary Plumbing program in the State of Florida. The SME will play a key role in ensuring that the program curriculum, course descriptions, syllabi, instructional requirements, laboratory/shop activities, and related academic documentation reflect current industry practices and are appropriately aligned with NCCER Plumbing standards, applicable Florida requirements, plumbing codes, occupational safety standards, and workforce expectations. The ideal candidate will combine substantial field experience in plumbing with knowledge of career and technical education, competency-based training, and NCCER curriculum and assessment requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

Design, develop, review, and validate Plumbing curriculum, course descriptions, syllabi, learning outcomes, competencies, and instructional content aligned with NCCER Plumbing curriculum and competencies.
Map program and course competencies to applicable NCCER modules, objectives, recommended instructional hours, knowledge assessments, and hands-on performance requirements.
Review academic and technical documentation to ensure accuracy, quality, consistency, industry relevance, and regulatory compliance.
Ensure the curriculum appropriately addresses Florida plumbing requirements and applicable plumbing, building, mechanical, fuel gas, accessibility, and safety codes.
Integrate practical competencies in areas such as plumbing safety, tools, plumbing math, drawings and specifications, piping materials and fittings, fixtures, drain-waste-vent (DWV) systems, water distribution systems, valves, water heaters, fuel gas systems, service plumbing, system sizing, troubleshooting, and other competencies appropriate to the program level.
Support documentation needed for institutional licensing, accreditation, program approval, and other applicable regulatory processes.
Provide recommendations regarding faculty/instructor qualifications, laboratory requirements, equipment, instructional resources, and industry credentials.
Collaborate with curriculum specialists, instructional designers, and academic leadership throughout the development process.
Participate in course development review meetings and provide documented technical recommendations and validation of program content.
Recognized plumbing trade credential, apprenticeship completion, journeyman/master plumber credential, NCCER credential, or equivalent industry qualification
Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Plumbing Technology, Construction Technology, Building Systems, Industrial Technology, or a related field preferred
Minimum 5+ years of clinical and/or academic experience in residential, commercial, or industrial plumbing
Prior experience in curriculum development, program review, workforce training, or technical education preferred
Strong knowledge of of plumbing systems, including water distribution, drain-waste-vent (DWV) systems, piping materials, fixtures, valves, water heaters, plumbing drawings, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting
Familiarity with NCCER curriculum, competency-based education, and hands-on performance assessment models

Regulatory & Accreditation Knowledge (Required):

Strong working knowledge of the Florida Building Code – Plumbing and other applicable Florida codes and regulations affecting plumbing installation and construction
Knowledge of NCCER Plumbing curriculum and competencies, including NCCER Core and Plumbing Levels 1–4, as applicable to the program
Knowledge of applicable OSHA safety requirements for construction and plumbing training environments
Understanding of Florida plumbing industry requirements and applicable contractor licensing and workforce credentialing pathways
Experience aligning technical curriculum with industry-recognized competencies, knowledge assessments, and hands-on performance requirements

Preferred Skills:

Experience designing or reviewing postsecondary, vocational, apprenticeship, or workforce Plumbing programs
NCCER instructor, trainer, evaluator, or related NCCER experience preferred
Knowledge of apprenticeship, employer partnership, and work-based learning models
Experience developing hands-on laboratory/shop activities and competency-based performance assessments
Experience working with Learning Management Systems (LMS)
