HVAC Service Technician — Diagnosis First, Not Sales

Precision Air Conditioning & Heating | Tallahassee, FL

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: Competitive hourly pay plus performance-based incentives
Experience: Experienced technicians and entry-level candidates encouraged to apply

Who We Are

Precision Air Conditioning & Heating is a local HVAC contractor serving Tallahassee and the surrounding areas. We believe a successful HVAC company is built on technical competence, honest recommendations, dependable employees, and customers who trust the people working in their homes.

We believe in diagnosing problems correctly and fixing them right—not pushing sales.

We are looking for an HVAC Service Technician who takes pride in troubleshooting, enjoys figuring out why equipment isn’t working properly, and understands that the customer’s best interest comes before making a sale.

If you are tired of feeling like you have to sell equipment or unnecessary repairs to be successful, we want to hear from you.

We welcome experienced technicians who can confidently diagnose and repair residential HVAC systems, as well as motivated candidates who have a mechanical aptitude and want to learn the trade the right way.

Our Philosophy: Diagnose First. Fix It Right.

At Precision, we want technicians who approach every service call with the mindset of a professional problem-solver.

We don’t want someone who walks through the door already looking for a reason to replace the system. We want someone who investigates the problem, tests the equipment, identifies the actual cause, and presents honest recommendations based on the findings.

Our expectations are simple:

Diagnose the problem before recommending a repair or replacement.
Use proper troubleshooting techniques instead of guessing or swapping parts unnecessarily.
Recommend repairs when repair is a reasonable solution.
Recommend replacement when the equipment’s condition, reliability, repair costs, or the customer’s needs genuinely justify it.
Explain findings and options honestly, without pressure tactics.
Never recommend unnecessary work just to increase the invoice.
Take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of your diagnosis.
Treat customers the way you would want your own family treated.

We believe long-term customer relationships are built through trust, not high-pressure sales. Our goal is to fix problems correctly, provide sound advice, and earn customers who want to call us again because they know we will take care of them.

What You’ll Do

Diagnose and troubleshoot residential air conditioning and heating systems.
Identify the root cause of equipment failures and performance issues.
Perform repairs and preventative maintenance on heat pumps, air conditioners, and related HVAC equipment.
Troubleshoot electrical components, refrigerant circuits, airflow problems, condensate drainage, and system controls.
Verify system operation after repairs and ensure the original complaint has been properly addressed.
Explain diagnostic findings and repair options clearly to customers.
Provide honest recommendations based on the equipment’s actual condition.
Complete service reports and document findings, work performed, and any outstanding concerns.
Communicate with the office regarding job progress, parts needs, scheduling, and follow-up work.
Maintain a clean, organized service vehicle and properly care for company tools and equipment.
Follow safe work practices, applicable codes, and manufacturer requirements.
Arrive on time, communicate proactively, and follow through on commitments.
Continue developing your technical knowledge and troubleshooting abilities.

Who We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate is dependable, honest, mechanically minded, and interested in becoming a better HVAC technician.

We value technical ability, but we also understand that skills can be developed by someone with the right attitude and work ethic.

Experienced technicians should have:

Experience diagnosing and repairing residential HVAC systems.
Working knowledge of heat pumps, air conditioning, electrical troubleshooting, and refrigeration principles.
The ability to troubleshoot problems methodically and explain the reasoning behind a diagnosis.
Good customer communication skills and professional judgment.

Entry-level candidates should have:

A genuine interest in HVAC and mechanical troubleshooting.
A willingness to learn proper diagnostic and repair procedures.
The ability to follow instructions, accept feedback, and apply what they learn.
A dependable attitude and commitment to developing their skills.
HVAC schooling, apprenticeship experience, or related mechanical experience is a plus.

Requirements for all candidates:

Dependability and punctuality.
Clear communication with customers, coworkers, and the office.
Professional behavior and respect for customers’ homes and property.
Willingness to take responsibility for work performed.
Ability to work independently when qualified and as part of a team.
Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
Ability to perform the physical requirements of HVAC service work, including working in attics, crawl spaces, and outdoor conditions.
EPA Section 608 certification preferred for technicians handling regulated refrigerants. Candidates who need training or certification may be considered.

Compensation and Performance Incentives

We offer competitive hourly compensation based on experience, qualifications, and demonstrated ability, along with performance-based incentives.

We want our technicians to be rewarded for being good at their jobs, not simply for selling more.

Performance expectations emphasize the things that make a technician valuable to the company and our customers, including:

Accurate diagnosis and effective repairs.
Quality workmanship and attention to detail.
Productivity and efficient use of time.
Clear communication and complete service documentation.
Customer satisfaction and professionalism.
Reliability, accountability, and follow-through.

Compensation and incentive details will be discussed during the interview process.

What Success Looks Like at Precision

A successful technician at Precision is someone who:

Shows up when expected and communicates when circumstances change.
Thinks through problems instead of immediately reaching for parts or recommending replacement.
Completes work efficiently without cutting corners.
Communicates honestly, even when the answer isn’t what the customer hoped to hear.
Accepts responsibility when something needs to be corrected.
Listens to feedback and consistently works to improve.
Understands that doing the job right is more important than taking the easy way out.

We want people who take pride in their work, want to keep learning, and understand that their reputation is built one service call at a time.
