Senior Project ManagerPosition Overview

The Senior Project Manager (SPM) provides single-point accountability for assigned projects or operates under the general direction of a Project Director or Senior Program Manager, depending on project complexity and risk. This role is responsible for leading or supporting all phases of project planning and execution to ensure defined project success factors are achieved.

Projects are typically classified as Low to Moderate risk under a risk-informed project ranking framework (e.g., "White” or "Green”). Higher-risk projects may also be assigned when supported by an approved Enhanced Support and Oversight Plan (ESOP). The Senior Project Manager is accountable for managing a portfolio of projects that may impact internal business units, senior leadership, and/or external stakeholders and regulatory agencies.

The role serves as a unifying leader, providing direction, decision-making, coordination, and control across cross-functional teams in alignment with established policies, procedures, governance models, and project management standards.

Key ResponsibilitiesProject Team Leadership & Staffing

Establish, staff, and lead cross-functional project teams, including both internal and external resources.
Provide leadership, oversight, direction, delegation, and coordination across matrixed organizations such as:
Development
Engineering
Project Controls
Estimating
Construction Management
Supply Chain & Procurement
Legal & Contracts
Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS)
Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC)
Operations & Maintenance
Communications & Stakeholder Engagement
Regulatory Affairs
Security, Fuels, Transmission, or other specialty groups as required
Interface with functional leaders to support team member placement, performance, development, and conflict resolution.
Guide matrixed team members on daily priorities and deliverables.

Stakeholder Communication & Governance

Establish and maintain effective communication among project team members, stakeholders, leadership, and governance bodies.
Structure, lead, or support:
Project kickoff meetings
Weekly and monthly project reviews
Executive and governance updates
Stakeholder and external coordination meetings
Prepare and present regular project status reports, dashboards, and executive summaries.
Ensure project plans, reporting tools, and communication protocols align with Project Management Center of Excellence (PMCoE) standards and applicable business unit procedures.
Serve as the primary interface with management and governance teams.

Project Planning

Lead and champion comprehensive project planning activities, including:
Scope definition and work planning
Cost estimating and budget development
Schedule development and controls
Procurement and contracting strategies
Equipment and vendor selection
Risk identification and mitigation planning
Safety, quality, environmental, and security planning
Start-up, commissioning, and close-out planning
Integration with other projects, programs, or operational initiatives
Ensure plans reflect realistic assumptions, constraints, and execution strategies.

Project Execution & Control

Execute projects in accordance with approved plans while maintaining adherence to scope, cost, schedule, safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.
Maintain accountability for:
Project objectives and deliverables
Stakeholder alignment
Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
Resource planning
Budget and cost controls
Risk management
Change management
Contractor and supplier performance
Lessons learned and continuous improvement
Oversee compliance with safety, environmental, quality, and security requirements.
Lead project close-out activities, including documentation, handover, and post-project evaluations.

Required / Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
Minimum 11 years of related project management or project execution experience
Demonstrated proficiency in core project management principles, tools, and methodologies
Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and cross-functional teams

Preferred Qualifications

Experience managing projects classified as Low to Moderate risk under a formal project ranking or risk-informed framework
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or Business
Advanced degree (preferred):
MBA
MS in Project Management
MS in Engineering
MS in Construction Management
Advanced knowledge of:
Project cost management
Scheduling and controls
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and technical documentation
Experience managing projects in the $5M to $100M+ range
Professional certifications such as:
PMP (Project Management Professional)
AACE
CMII
Utility or industry-specific technical certifications
Professional Engineer (PE) license or Contractor's License (preferred)
Utility, energy, or infrastructure project experience
Strong construction management knowledge
Proven strengths in:
Leadership and team development
Decision making and critical thinking
Problem solving and risk management
Oversight and governance

Demonstrated expertise in:
Project leadership and execution
Stakeholder presentations and executive communications
Risk-based decision making
Experience supporting regulated or commercial energy business units
Strong collaboration skills across technical, operational, and corporate functions
Proficiency with project scheduling and cost control systems

Pay: $75.00 - $80.00 per hour
