Job Summary
The 6GR/Combo Fitter Welder is responsible for fitting, aligning, and welding piping systems and structural components in a shipyard environment. This role requires expertise in performing high-quality welds in the 6GR position using multiple welding processes (SMAW, GTAW, FCAW), and strict adherence to ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform pipe fitting and welding in the 6GR position on carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy materials.
- Read and interpret blueprints, isometric drawings, and ship specifications.
- Lay out, fit, and assemble piping systems, structural components, and modules.
- Execute welding processes including:
- GTAW (TIG)
- FCAW (Flux Core)
- Ensure all welds meet ABS certification standards and shipyard quality requirements.
- Maintain compliance with ABS welding procedures, documentation, and inspection criteria.
- Perform joint preparation (beveling, grinding, cleaning).
- Conduct visual self-inspections and assist with NDT processes (as required).
- Use hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments accurately.
- Perform work in confined spaces, at heights, and in various weather conditions.
- Follow all safety regulations, PPE requirements, and shipyard procedures.
- Collaborate effectively with supervisors, inspectors, and other trades.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
- Current or ability to obtain ABS welding certification (required).
- Certified or qualified in 6GR pipe welding (must pass shipyard weld test to ABS standards).
- Minimum 3–5 years of pipe fitting and welding experience, preferably in a shipyard or marine environment.
- Strong knowledge of ABS, AWS, and/or NAVSEA welding codes and standards.
- Ability to pass required welding qualification tests and physical assessments.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain shipyard clearance (if required).
Skills & Competencies
- Proficiency in multi-process welding (TIG / Stick / Flux Core).
- Strong understanding of ABS welding procedures and marine fabrication standards.
- Blueprint reading and pipe layout expertise.
- High attention to detail and weld quality.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills in field conditions.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs regularly.
- Must be able to stand, bend, kneel, crawl, and climb for extended periods.
- Comfortable working in confined spaces, elevated areas, and outdoor shipyard environments.
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, and shift schedules as needed.
Work Environment
- Industrial shipyard environment with exposure to:
- Noise, welding fumes, and airborne particles
- Heat, cold, and changing weather conditions
- Heavy equipment and moving machinery
