Purpose of Position
- The Surface and Underground Field Service Technician provides lubrication, field service, and equipment reliability support at active surface and underground metal and nonmetal mining locations. The role supports surface and underground mobile and stationary equipment such as draglines, shovels, loaders, haul trucks, light support equipment, etc.....while working around operating equipment and production activity.
- The technician works independently while coordinating with mine supervision and complying with surface and underground traffic, ground-control, ventilation, communication, emergency, documentation, and customer requirements. This position reinforces SWRS’s commitment to HSSE, GOAL ZERO, and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- · Perform scheduled maintenance services and deliver SWRS Portfolio Products on mining and heavy equipment in accordance with OEM and site-specific standards, including oils, greases, antifreeze, lubrication systems, components, and associated fluids and materials.
- · Perform equipment inspections using checklists to identify wear, leaks, abnormal conditions, and early failure indicators.
- · Conduct minor repairs and adjustments identified to prevent escalation into major failures.
- · Complete work within customer-required service intervals and production schedules, and verify correct product selection.
- · Perform detailed visual and mechanical inspections on mobile and stationary mining equipment.
- · Execute precision lubrication practices aligned with OEM and SWRS standards and maintain strict contamination control during lubricant handling, transfer, and application.
- · Inspect and maintain automatic lubrication systems, including injectors, pumps, lines, reservoirs, and tanks.
- · Troubleshoot lubrication-system issues and perform repairs or adjustments.
- · Accurately complete work orders, BLDF sheets, field service tickets, and digital or paper documentation, including work performed, equipment condition, parts used, and time spent.
- · Ensure documentation supports billing accuracy, inventory tracking, maintenance history, and reliability analysis, using customer systems such as CMMS, Redlist, SAP, or JDE as required.
- · Maintain compliance with MSHA, OSHA, DOT, and site-specific safety requirements; complete pre-task hazard assessments and required vehicle inspections.
- · Follow mine-access and personnel-accountability procedures, underground communications, traffic controls, ventilation restrictions, and emergency requirements. Recognize unsafe conditions, stop work when necessary, and notify supervision.
- · Follow LOTO and site-specific energy-isolation procedures, control stored energy, maintain line-of-fire awareness, and coordinate safe equipment release with authorized mine personnel.
- · Operate and maintain assigned service trucks, lube trucks, support equipment, tools, parts, consumables, and lubricant inventory in a clean, safe, and service-ready condition.
- · Ensure proper product identification, labeling, and batch or lot traceability, and coordinate replenishment to prevent shortages or service delays.
- · Communicate effectively with mine maintenance personnel, reliability engineers, and operations staff regarding equipment condition, completed work, and recommended follow-up actions.
- · Support production by minimizing downtime, identifying recurring equipment issues, recommending corrective actions, and supporting root-cause failure analysis when needed.
- · Participate in ongoing technical and safety training, use required digital tools, and assist with onboarding or mentoring technicians when assigned.
- Preferred Qualifications
- · Experience in surface and underground mining, heavy equipment, or industrial lubrication services is preferred.
- · Basic working knowledge of mechanical systems found in mining fleet equipment.
- · Working knowledge of automatic lubrication systems, fluid handling, and contamination control.
- · Experience with oil analysis, condition monitoring, and reliability-based maintenance.

Education and Experience
- · High school diploma or equivalent.
- · Customer-service experience, ability to understand customer needs, and knowledge of mining operations.
- · Mechanical aptitude and effective interpersonal skills.
- · Ability to meet applicable CDL standards if required for the assignment.
- · MSHA certified or able to meet MSHA certification requirements before performing unsupervised surface and underground work.
- · Complete applicable MSHA Part 48 new-miner or newly hired experienced-miner training, annual refresher training, site-specific hazard training, and new-task training as required.
Schedule and Availability
- Elko-area reporting location with assignments at customer mine sites. Day shift, plus overtime and nights as required; travel between surface and underground operations and extended work periods may be required.
Physical Demands
Regularly stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, climb equipment access systems, handle hoses and tools, and enter or exit underground mobile equipment. Work may require restricted-clearance or awkward positions, uneven or wet surfaces, extended use of required PPE, and extended shifts. Surface and Underground Work Environment
Work is performed in surface and active underground mining areas with limited light, noise, dust, vibration, diesel exhaust, uneven or wet travelways, low clearances, moving equipment, and changing temperature or ventilation conditions. The role requires prescribed PPE and may involve work near pressurized systems, electrical equipment, lubricants, grease, and other industrial materials.
