Statement of Purpose: The welder/ mechanic will be responsible for the structural repairs and creation of equipment, while helping to maintain the equipment and grounds of a meat manufacturing facility.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for fabrication of new equipment and repairs/ modifications to old equipment.
- Secondary responsibilities are to maintain mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and hydronic systems as needed.
- Change parts of food processing and packing machines and other equipment.
- Schedule and complete daily maintenance and repair tasks, including preventative maintenance.
- Report problems, or necessary adjustments to supervisor in a timely manner
- Manage and own work to keep time and performance efficient
- Ensure optimal utilization, safety, food safety, productivity, efficiency, and reliability of all plant assets.
- Maintain a preventative / predictive maintenance program along with regular inspection of all machines and equipment.
- Monitor and make recommendations regarding improvements to equipment, machinery, processes, etc.
- Must be able to read and interpret technical drawings and documentation of all types (mechanical, electrical, schematic, and hydraulic, etc.) to accurately apply their skills in any situation.
- Participate in continuous improvement efforts and safety programs throughout the plant and practice safe work practices.
- Develop and maintain a good working relationship with all maintenance, production, and support personnel.
- Perform other duties as required.
COMPETENCIES AND KNOWLEDGE
- Must be able to TIG weld stainless and MIG weld various metals, knowing proper setting for the equipment that will be used. With an emphasis in food grade applications.
- Must be able to identify when the consumable parts of the welding equipment are needing to be replaced and have them ability to order them by a part number/ name.
- Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic preferred.
- Heavy equipment experience preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills and strong communication skills.
- Must be able to work well under pressure, meet various deadlines, and handle multiple, competing priorities. Must be extremely well organized and able to multitask.
- Strong background of safety practices.
- Punctual, reliable, and available during emergencies. Hours may vary based on production schedules for equipment repairs needed when production lines are not in operation.
- Collaborates effectively with other internal resources as well as external resources
Bilingual: Spanish bi-lingual skill preferred, but not required
Education/ Experience: High school diploma or GED, and two years of industrial maintenance training or experience, with a preference given for food manufacturing equipment, including comprehensive knowledge in three or more of the following areas: - Pipefitting & welding -Machining -Metal fabrication -Electricity -Instrumentation -Pneumatics & Hydraulics -Mechanical systems -Predictive/Preventative maintenance - Site utilities - System analysis & troubleshooting. Must be able to pass a welding quality test.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
This person must be motivated and be able to follow directions and complete tasks effectively. Thus, they must have initiative, organization, and dependability. Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis with the ability to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally. While performing the duties of this job the employee will be required to repetitively bend, twist, turn, stoop, crouch and other possibly uncomfortable positions while welding. They are required to regularly walk and stand, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, balance and talk or hear. The plant environment will include wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat (non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud when in the production area.
This position requires the employee to work closely with department supervisors, quality control, plant foreman, management team, and other employees, so teamwork and effective communication skills are very important.
