The Estimator will play a crucial role in the pre-construction phase of projects, responsible for accurately estimating the cost, materials, and labor required for a variety of civil construction projects. This position requires a keen eye for detail, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work closely with superintendents, engineers, and clients to develop competitive bids.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for civil construction projects, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
- Develop comprehensive bid packages and proposals, ensuring all project requirements and specifications are met.
- Perform quantity takeoffs from blueprints, specifications, and other documentation to determine the scope of work.
- Analyze project budgets and forecasts, identifying cost-saving opportunities and potential risks.
- Solicit and review quotes from suppliers and subcontractors, negotiating favorable terms and pricing.
- Work closely with superintendents, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure estimates align with project schedule, goals and timelines.
- Maintain organized records of all estimates, bids, and related documentation for future reference.
- Stay updated on industry trends, material costs, and technological advancements to ensure competitive and accurate estimates.
- Meet with clients to discuss project requirements, clarify details, and address any concerns related to cost estimates.
- Track jobs during construction to monitor progress, inform Superintendents of job status compared to the original estimate, suggest changes as needed to maintain profitability
- Perform job costing reports after closing out of each job, meet with Owner and Superintendents to advise of strengths and weaknesses, use data to continually refine future estimates
Requirements
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with customers via phone call, text, and email
- Excellent computer proficiency (MS Office – Word, Excel and Outlook)
- Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service
- Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, related field, or equivalent experience is a plus.
- 3+ years of experience in estimating for civil construction projects.
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and industry standards.
- Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., HCSS, PlanSwift, Bluebeam) and MS Office Suite (Excel, Word)
- Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
- Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone
