Responsible for the safe and efficient movement of raw materials, coated pipe, and heavy machinery using overhead bridge or gantry cranes. This role is critical to production, ensuring that pipes are correctly positioned for processing, storage, or loading onto trucks and railcars.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Crane Operation: Operate cab-controlled or remote-controlled overhead cranes to lift, move, and position pipes, steel plates, and equipment within the facility.
- Pipe Handling: Maneuver large-diameter pipe, often utilizing specialized below-the-hook lifting devices, magnets, or nylon slings to prevent damage to pipe coatings.
- Safety Inspections: Conduct daily pre-operational checks on the crane, including brakes, hoist ropes, hooks, and limit switches to ensure compliance with OSHA and company standards.
- Rigging and Loading: Secure loads for transport, or direct floor personnel (hookers/riggers) to attach loads securely, ensuring they are within the lifting capacity of the crane.
- Production Support: Work closely with production teams, moving material to and from assembly lines, storage, or outbound shipping areas.
- Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance, such as lubricating cables, checking fluids, and cleaning the crane cab.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate logs of material movement, production data, and equipment inspections.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: Generally 1–3 years of experience operating overhead bridge cranes in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to climb ladders to access crane cabs, work at heights, and stand for long periods.
- Technical Knowledge: Understanding of load charts, rigging techniques, and safe lifting procedures.
- Communication: Ability to follow radio commands or hand signals from ground crew.
Work Environment
- The work is typically done in an industrial, manufacturing, or pipe-coating facility.
- The environment can be loud and subject to extreme temperatures (hot/cold).
- Safety PPE is mandatory, including hard hats, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots.
