The Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) is responsible for verifying that welding activities and completed welds within Nassal’s fabrication operations meet approved drawings, project specifications, welding procedure requirements, applicable codes, and internal quality standards.
This position is engaged throughout the welding lifecycle, from document and material review through in-process surveillance, final inspection, reporting, and repair verification. The CWI partners with welders, fabricators, project teams, engineering, and shop leadership to protect safety, quality, schedule, and the craftsmanship expected in immersive themed and structural environments.
The successful CWI combines technical authority with practical shop awareness, clear communication, sound judgment, and the confidence to identify nonconforming work while helping the team achieve durable, visually appropriate, code-compliant results.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Follow all safety regulations, PPE requirements, and shop procedures.
· Verify material identification, condition, traceability, filler metals, consumables, joint preparation, fit-up, alignment, cleanliness, backing, and preheat requirements.
· Identify inspection hold points, acceptance criteria, documentation needs, and potential quality risks before fabrication proceeds.
· Coordinate with the QA/QC Manager, Metal Foreman, Engineering, Project Management, and production leads to clarify requirements and resolve discrepancies.
· Monitor welding operations for compliance with approved WPS, project specifications, and applicable code requirements.
· Perform visual inspection of completed welds size, length, profile, contour, reinforcement, undercut, overlap, porosity, cracks, incomplete fusion, arc strikes, distortion, and other relevant discontinuities.
· Determine acceptance or rejection in accordance with specified codes, approved drawings, project criteria, and documented tolerances.
· Prepare accurate, timely inspection reports clearly recording inspected work, applicable criteria, results, deficiencies, corrective actions, and final disposition.
· Use Autodesk Build or other designated systems for inspection documentation, progress tracking, photographs, issue management, and closeout records.
· Support root-cause review and corrective action for recurring weld quality issues.
· Provide practical coaching to welders and fabricators on workmanship expectations, inspection findings, and code-compliant corrective actions.
· Assist with internal audits, client or third-party inspections, mockups, first-article reviews, and project closeout activities.
· Promote a culture which quality concerns are raised early, facts documented clearly, and safety and integrity never compromised.
· Additional duties as assigned.
COMPETENCIES:
· Technical Knowledge: Applies strong working knowledge of welding processes, discontinuities, inspection methods, fabrication practices, drawings, specifications, and applicable AWS requirements.
· Integrity and Professional Judgment: Reports conditions objectively, applies acceptance criteria consistently, and maintains quality standards even when findings affect production or schedule.
· Communication: Explains requirements and findings clearly in verbal and written form; adapts communication for welders, supervisors, project teams, clients, and third-party inspectors.
· Collaboration: Works constructively with production while maintaining independent inspection judgment and appropriate quality authority.
· Attention to Detail: Recognizes subtle conditions that may affect weld quality, dimensional compliance, fit, finish, or long-term performance.
· Problem-Solving: Evaluates defects and process variation, helps identify root causes, and supports practical corrective and preventive actions.
· Organization: Maintains complete, traceable, and timely records across multiple projects and shifting priorities.
· Adaptability: Responds effectively to custom fabrication, unique materials, changing project requirements, and visual and structural demands of themed environments.
· Safety Awareness: Identifies hazards, follows PPE and shop requirements, and intervenes appropriately when unsafe or noncompliant conditions observed.
· Development Mindset: Maintains required credentials and pursues continued learning in codes, inspection methods, materials, and fabrication technology.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential in good standing is required.
· High school diploma or equivalent is required; technical school, welding, fabrication, engineering technology, or quality training is preferred.
· Demonstrated experience in welding inspection, welding, metal fabrication, or a closely related quality role.
· Working knowledge of structural steel and aluminum fabrication; experience with stainless steel, pipe, plate, sheet metal, and custom assemblies is beneficial.
· Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, weld symbols, WPS documents, specifications, inspection and test plans, and fabrication tolerances.
· Practical knowledge of MIG, TIG, and Stick welding processes and common fabrication defects.
· Experience applying AWS D1.1 and AWS D1.2 requirements is strongly preferred; familiarity with other applicable codes and project-specific standards is beneficial.
· Proficiency with standard visual weld inspection gauges and basic dimensional inspection tools.
· Ability to produce clear inspection reports and use digital documentation systems; experience with Autodesk Build or similar platforms is preferred.
· Nondestructive testing credentials or experience are a plus.
· Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project or vendor locations as business needs require.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
· Metal fabrication shop environment with exposure to noise, dust, heat, and moving machinery.
· Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
· May be required to work extended hours or weekends depending on project needs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
· Ability to lift, sand, mask, and move materials up to 30 lbs. as needed.
· Comfortable standing, bending, and performing repetitive tasks for extended periods.
· Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to safely use tools and materials.
· Must maintain continuous awareness of hazards and enforce safety practices.
