Job Overview
Run Big Iron. Make Parts That Matter.
GMS is a CNC machine shop that does large-format work. We make big, complex parts in low volumes, where every setup counts and every feature has to be right. We're looking for a skilled CNC Large Turn Lathe Machinist who likes the challenge of heavy work and takes pride in cutting good parts on the first try.
If you know how to pick up a 2,000 lb. forging safely, indicate it in, and hold tight tolerances over long cycle times, we'd like to talk to you.
What You'll Do
- Set up and run large CNC lathes and turning centers (large swing, long bed, heavy workpieces)
- Read and work from blueprints, GD&T callouts, routers, and setup sheets
- Rig, load, and indicate heavy parts using overhead cranes, hoists, and lifting gear
- Pick and set up chucks, steady rests, tailstocks, fixtures, and tooling
- Prove out programs and make offset and program edits at the control (Fanuc or similar)
- Do first-piece checks and in-process inspections with micrometers, bore gauges, indicators, height gauges, and other precision tools
- Fill out inspection records, production tracking, and shift handoff notes accurately
- Work with programming, quality/CMM, and leadership to fix problems and improve setups and cycle times
- Keep your machine and work area clean, safe, and maintained
- Experience with CNC machining, CNC programming, manual machining, metal machining, and machine setup is valuable; large-turn-lathe experience is especially relevant.
- Bring mechanical knowledge, blueprint interpretation skills, and familiarity with precision measurement and CNC quality inspection.
- Knowledge of electrical discharge machining, plastics injection molding, lean manufacturing, welding, or assembly is a plus, not a requirement.
- Comfort using hand and power tools is expected; forklift experience is helpful.
What We're Looking For
- [3–5+] years of CNC lathe experience, including setup and operation
- Experience turning large or heavy parts (big diameters, long shafts, rings, housings, flanges, or similar)
- Good at reading blueprints, with working knowledge of GD&T
- Comfortable using cranes and rigging, with a safety-first mindset
- Confident with precision measuring tools and holding tight tolerances
- Able to work on your own, troubleshoot problems, and own the quality of your work
- Reliable, on time, and a clear communicator
Nice to Have
- Fanuc control experience and G-code editing at the machine
- Experience with vertical turning lathes (VTLs) or big-bore lathes
- Experience with steel alloys, stainless, Inconel, titanium, or aluminum
- Experience in aerospace, energy, oil and gas, defense, or heavy equipment work
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 / AS9100 quality systems
- Crane or forklift certification
Why GMS
- Competitive pay based on experience:
- [Health, dental, and vision insurance]
- [401(k) / retirement plan]
- [Paid time off and paid holidays]
- [Overtime available]
- Interesting, challenging large-part work, not the same small part over and over
- A shop that values doing things right: documented setups, real inspection support, and clear expectations
- Room to grow into lead, setup, or programming roles
Physical Requirements
- Able to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Able to work safely around heavy machinery and suspended loads
- Must wear required PPE
Pay: $32.00 - $38.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40.0 per week
Benefits:
- 401(k)
