Fire Sprinkler Designer / Layout Technician

Location: Greater St. Louis Area

Compensation: $70,000–$85,000 annually, depending on experience

Employment Type: Full-Time | Onsite

About the Opportunity

We are partnering with an established fire protection contractor in the Greater St. Louis area to hire a Fire Sprinkler Designer / Layout Technician.

This is an excellent opportunity for a technically skilled designer who enjoys hands-on design work, takes pride in producing accurate drawings, and wants to play an important role within a close-knit team.

Our client is seeking someone who can independently manage fire sprinkler design projects, collaborate with project managers and field personnel, and contribute to projects from initial layout through installation.

Unlike positions that eventually transition into sales or project management, this role offers the opportunity to remain focused primarily on the technical design work you enjoy.

Key Responsibilities

Develop detailed fire sprinkler system layouts and shop drawings for commercial, industrial, and other construction projects.
Design systems in accordance with NFPA standards, FM Global requirements, and applicable local codes.
Perform hydraulic calculations, including pipe sizing, sprinkler spacing, and system configuration.
Prepare material stock lists, fabrication drawings, and installation details.
Coordinate sprinkler designs with architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical plans.
Review construction documents, specifications, and project requirements to identify potential conflicts.
Prepare drawings and documentation for engineer and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) approvals.
Collaborate with project managers, general contractors, installers, and other trades to resolve design challenges.
Participate in occasional site visits and field surveys.
Manage multiple design projects while maintaining accuracy, quality, and deadlines.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Approximately 2–5 years of experience in fire sprinkler system layout and design preferred.
Hands-on experience with fire sprinkler design software such as AutoSPRINK, HydraCAD, SprinkCAD, or Revit.
Strong working knowledge of NFPA 13 and related fire protection standards.
Experience performing hydraulic calculations and preparing complete sprinkler shop drawings.
Ability to interpret architectural, structural, and MEP construction documents.
Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to manage design responsibilities independently with limited supervision.
Willingness to work onsite in the Maryland Heights area five days per week.

Preferred Qualifications

NICET Level II or higher certification in Water-Based Systems Layout.
Experience with FM Global fire protection design requirements.
Knowledge of NFPA 14, NFPA 20, and NFPA 24.
BIM coordination and 3D modeling experience.
Experience designing systems for warehouses, industrial facilities, and complex commercial projects.
Experience preparing material stock lists and fabrication drawings.

Candidates who are earlier in their careers but can demonstrate strong technical capabilities are encouraged to apply.

Compensation & Benefits

Our client offers a competitive compensation package, including:

Base salary: $65,000–$85,000, depending on experience and qualifications
401(k) retirement plan with employer match
Health insurance stipend
Paid time off and paid holidays
Company-provided phone

Own your projects. Take responsibility for sprinkler layouts, calculations, and technical deliverables while working closely with experienced industry professionals.

Continue developing your skills. Work across a variety of commercial and industrial projects while expanding your technical expertise.
