HVAC Installer – (Kitsap, Washington State)

Position Summary

The HVAC Installer Lead oversees residential and light commercial HVAC installation projects, leads installation crews, ensures code-compliant, high-quality workmanship, and maintains safety and customer satisfaction standards. This role is both hands-on and supervisory, with responsibility for training installers and coordinating jobs with office and field teams.

Key Responsibilities

Lead Installer

Lead, train, and supervise HVAC installation crew members
Install heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems (furnaces, heat pumps, condensers, air handlers, ductwork, thermostats, etc.)
Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and work orders
Ensure job performance aligns with local codes, manufacturer specs, and safety policies
Act as the primary on-site contact with customers, explaining system operation and best practices
Inspect and test installations before turnover
Coordinate with dispatch, sales, and warehouse teams
Troubleshoot installation challenges and resolve field issues
Complete job documentation, including time sheets, logs, and material records

Installer

Install HVAC systems including furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, and ductwork
Replace and retrofit existing systems
Follow blueprints and job specifications
Ensure all installations meet safety and code requirements
Maintain clean and organized job sites
Communicate professionally with customers and team members
Safely operate company vehicles, tools, and equipment

Washington State Electrical & HVAC Licensing Requirements

Washington State has unique licensing rules for HVAC work because the state does not issue a separate statewide HVAC license. Instead:

Electrical Licensing (Required for HVAC Installers)

HVAC professionals in WA must obtain an electrical specialty license through the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) to perform many aspects of HVAC work that involve electrical systems.
The most relevant specialty for HVAC is the HVAC/Refrigeration (06A) electrical certification. This allows work on HVAC electrical systems per code.
To qualify for the 06A electrical certification exam, applicants generally must have:
4,000 hours of documented work experience in the electrical construction trade under supervision, and
Classroom instruction in electrical fundamentals (typically ~48–96 hours depending on status and pathway).
Trainees must be supervised by a certified electrician until they complete requirements.
Other electrical specialties (e.g., restricted HVAC (06B)) allows limited work scopes under specific conditions.

Local City Requirements:
Some cities like Seattle, Spokane, Yakima, Pullman, and Kennewick may have additional local HVAC or mechanical permits/licenses needed for HVAC work inside city limits.

EPA Refrigerant Certification:
Per federal law, all HVAC technicians must hold a EPA Section 608 refrigerant handling certification (Type I, II, III, or Universal) as required to handle refrigerants.

Required Qualifications

Minimum:

3 to 5+ years of HVAC installation experience
Strong technical knowledge of residential/light commercial HVAC systems
Leadership/supervisory experience
EPA Section 608 Universal Certification
Electrical specialty certification (e.g., WA EL 06A) or actively working toward it
Valid driver’s license
Clean drivers background, company insurance requires no priors

Preferred:

NATE certification
OSHA 10/30 training
Experience with advanced systems (zoning, VRF, smart thermostats)

Work Schedule & Pay

Hours: Typically 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM (may vary by job).
Attendance: Employees must arrive on time and notify supervisors of absences.
Pay Schedule: Paid bi-weekly via Direct Deposit.
Overtime: Non-exempt employees receive 1.5x pay for hours worked over 40 per week (pre-approval required).
