Job Title: Ship Builder (Apprentice to Journeyman – all skill levels)

Location: Driscoll Mission Bay Boat Yard & Marina, San Diego, CA

Employment Type: Full-Time (Mon—Fri, 7:30 AM — 4:00 PM)

Project Duration: Approximately 2.5 years (2026—2028)

Pay Range: $20.00/hr (Entry Level Apprentice) — $45.00/hr (Journeyman)

Benefits: Paid holidays (no health insurance provided)

About the Project

Join the historic PILGRIM Ill ship build team — an exciting multi-year effort to construct a full-scale recreation of the 1825 brig PILGRIM, blending traditional wooden shipbuilding methods with modern naval architecture. This project is both a craft-driven construction endeavor and a community-oriented effort to preserve maritime history, craftsmanship, and experiential learning around classic shipbuilding techniques.

Position Summary

The Ship Builder will play a key role in the hands-on construction of the PILGRIM Ill vessel. This role involves woodworking, joinery, assembly, and finish work as part of a collaborative team under the direction of experienced shipwrights. Candidates may join at the apprentice level and advance to journeyman as skills develop.

Qualifications

Previous experience in carpentry, boat building, woodworking, or related trades useful but not necessary
