Overview

I am seeking an experienced commercial fire sprinkler designer to serve as a part-time consultant and mentor. This role is focused on advancing my skills in NFPA 13 commercial design through structured, hands-on project walkthroughs.

I have 5+ years of experience designing residential fire sprinkler systems under NFPA 13D and am intentionally transitioning into commercial design. This position is not for plan production or submittals — it is structured mentorship using real, previously completed commercial projects for learning and professional development.

Scope of Work

Review my completed work prior to each Zoom meeting
Provide technical critique and design guidance
Walk through the entire commercial design process, including:
Hazard classification
System selection and layout strategy
Hydraulic calculations
Code compliance and AHJ considerations
Explain design reasoning and code intent (not just corrections)
Outline next steps or assignments between sessions

Meeting Structure

2 Zoom meetings per week
1 hour per session
Ongoing schedule (mutually agreed upon days/times)

Project Details

Existing commercial sprinkler projects
Used for training purposes only
No drawings will be submitted AHJ's
No stamping or liability required

Required Qualifications

7+ years of experience designing NFPA 13 commercial fire sprinkler systems or Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) with fire protection experience
Strong working knowledge of NFPA 13
Experience with warehouses, mixed-use, industrial, or pump-fed systems
Comfortable explaining design decisions clearly
Experience working with AHJs in California (Los Angeles County preferred)

Preferred Qualifications

NICET Level III or IV in Water-Based Systems Layout
Experience reviewing shop drawings or performing QA/QC
Experience mentoring junior designers

Compensation

Hourly consulting rate, commensurate with experience
Estimated commitment: ~2 hours per week
Long-term arrangement preferred
