Southwest Steel Fabrication, founded in 1910, is an AISC-certified structural steel fabricator located in Bonner Springs, Kansas. We perform structural fabrication for commercial construction and heavy fabrication for DOTs and the US Army Corps of Engineers.

This position is for an independent fitter/fabricator who can also weld.
This is not a production welding role.

Core Responsibilities (all levels)

Independently read and interpret shop and erection drawings
Perform layout, fitting, and fabrication of structural and misc assemblies
Tack weld and, when required, fully weld fabricated components
Fabricate to AISC quality standards with minimal supervision
Pass applicable fit and weld tests
Proficiency with FCAW and GMAW

Skill Levels

Level I – Fitter / Welder

Structural and commercial layout and fitting
Basic fabrication and tack welding
Ability to weld structural components as needed
AWS D1.1 welding proficiency

Level II - Fitter / Welder

All Level I responsibilities plus:
AWS D1.5 welding proficiency
Torch proficiency
Experience fabricating handrail, stairs, and CJP prep and welds
Ability to fit and weld complete assemblies independently

Level III - Senior Fitter

All Level II responsibilities plus:
AWS D1.2 and D1.6 welding proficiency
DOT and/or US Army Corps of Engineers project experience
Heat straightening, SAW, track torch, and arc gouging
Ability to take complex fabrication from print to finished product

Full Time hours are 7:00a - 3:30p or with the opportunity for overtime as work permits.
