About our Facility:

The City of Salem’s wastewater is treated at two facilities, the Willow Lake Water Pollution Control Facility and the River Road Peak Wet Weather Treatment Facility. Willow Lake is the main treatment facility for the City with a design average dry weather flow of 35 MGD and a peak wet weather capacity of 155 MGD. It can be operated in trickling filter/activated sludge and conventional air activated sludge based on flow and loading conditions. Effluent is disinfected with sodium hypochlorite solution and dechlorinated with sodium bisulfite. Solids handling consists of mesophilic anaerobic digestion and dewatering with centrifuges. Class B biosolids are re-used through land application of centrifuge cake. The Willow Lake Treatment Facility operates 24/7, 365 day per year. The River Road Peak Wet Weather Treatment Facility is a 50-mgd, high rate, physical/chemical ballasted sedimentation facility with ultraviolet disinfection.
