Job Overview
We are hiring an Assistant Project Manager to support project managers on active commercial, industrial, and government projects. This is a hands-on position with real ownership from day one — you will run submittals and RFIs, help buy out scope, track costs, and coordinate directly with subcontractors, designers, and owner representatives. The role is structured as a direct path to Project Manager or Superintendant for the right person.

What You'll Do

Document control and coordination

Manage the submittal register and RFI log from creation through resolution; drive open items to closure rather than waiting on them.
Review shop drawings, product data, and coordination drawings against contract documents and flag scope gaps, conflicts, and drawing discrepancies before they reach the field.
Maintain current drawing sets, ASI/bulletin logs, and as-built documentation.

Buyout and subcontract administration

Assist in scoping and leveling subcontractor and supplier proposals; prepare scope-of-work exhibits that clearly assign responsibility and eliminate gaps.
Prepare subcontracts, purchase orders, and change orders for PM review; track insurance certificates, bonds, and compliance documents.
Maintain the procurement and long-lead item log against the project schedule.

Cost and schedule

Support monthly pay application preparation, including schedule of values updates and subcontractor billing review.
Track budget-to-actual costs, prepare change order pricing, and assist with cost projections.
Update project schedules with the PM and superintendent; identify activities at risk and the drivers behind them.

Field support and quality

Attend and document OAC and subcontractor coordination meetings.
Support field staff on layout questions, material tracking, and quality control inspections.
Assist with safety documentation and pre-task planning compliance.

Government and institutional project compliance

Assist with certified payroll and prevailing-wage documentation on federally and state-funded work.
Support owner-specific reporting requirements, including participation reporting and material sourcing documentation.
Assist with closeout: O&M manuals, warranties, training, punch list resolution, and final lien releases.

Qualifications

Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications across architectural, structural, and MEP disciplines.
Strong written communication. Much of this job is creating a clear, defensible written record.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Google Workspace.
Valid driver's license and the ability to travel to project sites in the Knoxville region.
Ability to perform periodic site walks on active construction sites, including uneven terrain, ladders, and partially completed structures, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred

[1–4] years of experience with a general contractor, subcontractor, design firm, or owner in a construction role, including internships and co-ops.
Experience on public or institutional work — higher education, K-12, municipal, state, or federal.
Working knowledge of Sage 300 CRE , JONAS, OnScreen, Adobe and Microsoft Project.
Familiarity with AIA A201 general conditions, CSI MasterFormat, and standard construction contract structures.
OSHA 30, first aid/CPR, or LEED credentials.
Estimating exposure — quantity takeoff, bid day support, or conceptual budgeting.

Primarily office-based with routine site visits as needed

Pay: $46,800.00 - $57,200.00 per year
