Marine HVAC Service Technician

Charleston Yacht | Charleston, SC
Full-Time | Charleston-Area Marinas

About the Role

Charleston Yacht is looking for an experienced Marine HVAC Service Technician who enjoys diagnosing problems, fixing things, and working across a variety of boat systems.

Your primary focus will be marine air-conditioning systems, including troubleshooting, maintenance, and repairs. We're also looking for someone who is comfortable handling marine plumbing and other general service work when needed.

We're not looking for someone who just swaps parts. We want someone who can figure out why something isn't working and knows how to fix it.

You don't need to be an expert in every system on a boat. We have other technicians with specialties in electrical, mechanical, and general marine service. We're looking for someone who brings strong HVAC capabilities to the team and enjoys being a well-rounded problem solver.

What You'll Work On

Your primary responsibility will be marine HVAC systems, but the work will vary from boat to boat and may include:

Marine HVAC & Refrigeration

Diagnosing and repairing marine air-conditioning systems
Troubleshooting compressors, pumps, controls, and electrical components
Servicing self-contained and split marine AC systems
Working with chilled-water systems when experienced
Refrigerant diagnostics, leak detection, and repairs
Raw-water cooling systems, strainers, pumps, and circulation issues
Preventative maintenance and system inspections
Identifying failing components and recommending repairs or replacements
Marine refrigeration troubleshooting and repairs when experienced

Marine Plumbing & General Service

Freshwater and raw-water systems
Marine plumbing diagnosis and repair
Pumps, hoses, fittings, valves, and filters
Water heaters and sanitation systems
Bilge pumps and float switches
Basic 12V electrical troubleshooting
General marine repairs and preventative maintenance
Supporting other technicians on larger jobs when needed

Some days you'll know exactly what the repair is before arriving. Other days the job will simply start with, "The AC isn't cooling. Figure out why."

You should enjoy that.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who is technically capable, dependable, and comfortable solving problems independently.

You should be able to:

Diagnose HVAC problems rather than simply replace parts
Independently troubleshoot and repair air-conditioning systems
Understand refrigeration cycles, electrical controls, and cooling systems
Work with pumps, plumbing, and related marine systems
Read wiring diagrams and technical documentation
Use diagnostic tools and equipment safely
Recognize when a problem requires additional expertise
Identify additional maintenance or repair needs while aboard a vessel
Document what you found and what work was completed
Communicate clearly with our Service Advisor and other technicians
Keep jobs and work areas clean and organized
Treat customers' boats like they matter

Experience

HVAC service and repair experience is strongly preferred.

Marine HVAC experience is ideal, but we're also interested in experienced residential or commercial HVAC technicians who want to transition into the marine industry.

EPA Section 608 certification is required for technicians performing refrigerant work.

Experience with marine plumbing, electrical systems, or general boat maintenance is a major plus.

For the right technician, we care more about what you can actually diagnose and fix than where you learned how to do it.

A valid driver's license and reliable transportation are required.

How Our Team Works

Charleston Yacht takes a team approach to yacht service.

You'll be our go-to technician for HVAC service and repairs, working alongside other technicians with specialties in electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and general marine systems.

We want technicians who can work independently but also recognize the value of having a team behind them.

When you find additional work a vessel needs, you'll document it for our Service Advisor, who handles customer communication, approvals, and scheduling so you can focus on doing great technical work.

Compensation

Someone toward the lower end of the range may have solid HVAC experience but need training on marine systems.

Someone at the top of the range should be able to independently take a marine HVAC service call, diagnose the problem, determine the repair needed, and complete the work with minimal supervision.

Full-time, year-round work.

Work Environment

This is a field-based position servicing yachts and other vessels throughout Charleston-area marinas.

You'll regularly work aboard boats, on docks, outdoors, and occasionally in tight spaces. The position requires the ability to lift and move tools, equipment, and components associated with normal marine HVAC and service work.

If you're the person people call when the AC stops cooling because you can figure out what's wrong and fix it, we'd like to meet you.
