Duell Plumbing, Heating and Cooling
Location: Schenectady, NY – Serving the Capital Region
Job Type: Full-Time, Year-Round
Pay: $35.00–$45.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications, plus eligible bonuses

Join an Established, Family-Owned Company

Duell Plumbing, Heating and Cooling is seeking a highly experienced, dependable, and technically skilled HVAC Service Technician to join our team.

We are a family-owned plumbing, heating, and cooling company with more than 46 years of experience serving customers throughout New York's Capital Region.

We are looking for a technician who takes pride in their workmanship, has excellent diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities, and can work independently to identify and resolve complex heating and cooling problems.

This is primarily a service and diagnostic position, not an entry-level position or an installation-only position.

We believe in treating our employees with respect and recognize the importance of family, personal time, and a healthy work-life balance. We are looking for someone interested in building a long-term career with a stable, established company.

Primary Responsibilities

Independently diagnose, troubleshoot, service, and repair residential and light commercial HVAC equipment.
Diagnose and repair natural gas and propane furnaces, including high-efficiency systems.
Service conventional gas-fired boilers, high-efficiency condensing boilers, and combination boiler/domestic hot water systems.
Troubleshoot hydronic heating systems, including radiant floor heating, circulator pumps, zone valves, mixing valves, expansion tanks, and related controls.
Diagnose electrical and electronic control problems using appropriate testing equipment.
Service and repair central air conditioning systems, heat pumps, and associated refrigeration components.
Diagnose ignition failures, combustion-related problems, airflow issues, temperature control problems, and system performance concerns.
Troubleshoot thermostats, control boards, relays, sensors, variable-speed motors, and other HVAC components.
Perform preventive maintenance, safety inspections, and system performance evaluations.
Clearly explain findings and recommended repairs to customers in a professional and honest manner.
Complete accurate service documentation and maintain an organized, properly stocked company service vehicle.
Follow manufacturer specifications, applicable codes, and established safety procedures.

Important: Our company does not service oil-fired heating equipment. Oil burner experience is not required.

Required Experience and Qualifications

We are seeking an experienced technician with demonstrated proficiency in HVAC service and troubleshooting.

The ideal candidate will possess:

Substantial hands-on experience diagnosing and repairing residential and light commercial HVAC systems.
Strong knowledge of natural gas and propane heating equipment.
Proven ability to diagnose and repair gas-fired boilers and hydronic heating systems.
Excellent electrical troubleshooting skills, including the ability to read wiring diagrams and use electrical testing instruments.
Experience diagnosing central air conditioning and heat pump systems.
Ability to independently identify the root cause of equipment failures rather than relying on unnecessary parts replacement.
Familiarity with modern high-efficiency HVAC equipment and electronic controls.
EPA Section 608 certification appropriate for the refrigerant work performed.
Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
Strong communication skills, professionalism, reliability, and respect for customers and coworkers.

Candidates must have meaningful field service experience and be capable of handling service calls independently.

Additional Skills That Are a Plus

Advanced experience with high-efficiency condensing boilers and combination heating/domestic hot water systems.
Experience with radiant floor heating and advanced hydronic controls.
Experience with variable-speed HVAC equipment, communicating controls, and sophisticated diagnostic systems.
Light commercial HVAC service experience.
Experience with equipment installation, system commissioning, and startup procedures.

Installation experience is appreciated, but our primary need is for an exceptional service and troubleshooting technician.

Compensation and Benefits

We offer a competitive compensation package designed to recognize experience, technical ability, and quality workmanship.

Hourly pay of $35.00–$45.00, depending on experience and qualifications.
Full-time, year-round employment.
Fully equipped company service van.
Paid vacation after six months of satisfactory employment.
Paid holidays after six months of satisfactory employment.
401(k) retirement plan, subject to plan eligibility requirements.
Monetary bonus for participation in the emergency on-call rotation.
Opportunities to earn additional performance and sales-related bonuses for qualifying equipment upgrades, legitimate replacement recommendations, and additional services.
Established customer base and a stable working environment.
A professional, respectful, family-oriented workplace.

We encourage honest, customer-first recommendations. Our goal is to provide the right solutions for our customers, not unnecessary sales.

Emergency On-Call Rotation

Our technicians participate in a rotating seven-day emergency on-call schedule, generally once every three to five weeks, depending on staffing.

Technicians receive additional monetary compensation for their assigned on-call rotation.

Specific scheduling arrangements and compensation details will be discussed during the interview process.

Our Commitment to Employees

At Duell Plumbing, Heating and Cooling, we understand that our employees have families, responsibilities, and lives outside of work.

We believe in mutual respect, open communication, and recognizing the value of an experienced technician's knowledge and dedication.

We are not simply looking to fill a position. We want to welcome a skilled professional who takes pride in their work and wants to be part of a company that appreciates their contribution.
