JOB
Summary: Under direction, performs skilled and highly-skilled work in carpentry and related trades in the repair, maintenance, replacement and general upkeep of County facilities by performing a wide variety of skilled trades work and lead work activities to keep the County buildings in sound physical condition (rough and finished carpentry, cabinet making, cement finishing work, Formica work, etc.).
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Essential Job Functions: Performs a variety of building renovation, built-in furniture fabrication and maintenance carpentry activities within existing County buildings to keep the appearances of the interiors and exteriors up to Departmental standards; after removing existing interiors, erects completely new room interiors following plans and/or blueprints; may prepare design sketches of built-in cabinets, desks, counters, book shelves, etc. and prepares blueprints/specifications for approval by the manager of the office/department being renovated; replaces worn or rotting boards, re-hangs doors, tears out and replaces windows, molding, shelving, etc. and stains, finishes or paints new wood or plaster to match what already exists. Estimates costs, orders materials and built-in new cabinets for shelving, desks, counters, closets, etc. to help with storage or furnishing problems; in the wood shop cuts and assembles all of the pieces of such items as new stand alone cabinets, using existing or new wood materials, to serve special purposes for various County Departments; and delivers and installs completed furniture items; and performs rough carpentry to construct forms for such concrete jobs as new sidewalks, replacement curbing or steps, etc., pouring and finishing concrete to complete the job. Scrapes old or peeling paint off of exterior and interior walls, prepares surface for new paint, stain, varnish or wallpaper; erects wall partitions or partial partitions for new office space, installing electrical outlets and new wall board, as needed; repairs holes or cracks in walls with patching plaster or mortar, and applies the new surface treatment smoothing out any roughness in the finished work; helps Electrician by replacing burned out fuses, working on balances, pulling wires and installing fixtures; assists Plumbers by working on commodes, water coolers, unstopping drains and changing fixtures; changes light bulbs and filters on air-conditioning units. Cuts grass, edges sidewalks and helps with the general upkeep of grounds; maintains an awareness of proper safety procedures and guidelines and applies these in performing daily activities and tasks. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position. Other Job Functions: Performs other job related duties as directed. WORK SITUATIONS/DEMANDS/EFFORT: Job requires flexibility in order to perform a variety of tasks; performing routine, repetitive duties. WORKING CONDITIONS: Office work is performed in an office-controlled environment; work is also performed in all areas of the County. Worker is subject to adverse weather and environmental conditions, including temperature extremes, humidity, and precipitation; noise and vibration; physical hazards from moving machinery, equipment with moving parts; adverse atmospheric conditions from dust, fumes and chemicals.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Job duties require regular walking and standing; working with tools, electrical equipment, machinery; climbing ladders and scaffolds. Duties also require heavy work such as moving objects weighing 75lbs. or more; i.e. tools, equipment, supplies, paper, etc., by lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling.
