Job Summary
PermaCold Logistics is seeking a skilled and dependable Refrigeration & General Maintenance Technician to support the safe, efficient operation of our cold storage 3PL warehouse. This role is responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting industrial refrigeration systems (ammonia-based) as well as performing general facility maintenance to ensure uptime, safety, and compliance.
This position is essential to maintaining product integrity, operational uptime, and safety within our cold storage operation. The right candidate will play a key role in protecting inventory, supporting customer satisfaction, and ensuring regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Refrigeration Systems (Primary Focus)
- Operate, monitor, and maintain industrial ammonia refrigeration systems
- Perform routine inspections, logs, and preventative maintenance on compressors, evaporators, condensers, and associated equipment
- Troubleshoot system issues and respond to alarms or system failures
- Assist with startup, shutdown, and seasonal system adjustments
- Ensure compliance with IIAR, OSHA PSM, and EPA RMP standards
- Maintain accurate refrigeration logs and maintenance records
- Coordinate with third-party refrigeration contractors when needed
General Maintenance (Secondary Role)
- Perform general facility repairs (doors, dock equipment, racking, lighting, etc.)
- Maintain battery charging areas (especially lithium forklift charging systems)
- Conduct routine inspections of the building interior and exterior
- Address minor plumbing, electrical, and mechanical issues
- Support preventive maintenance programs across the facility
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all safety procedures related to ammonia refrigeration systems
- Participate in emergency response planning and drills
- Assist in maintaining Process Safety Management (PSM) documentation (if applicable)
- Ensure proper use of PPE and adherence to company safety policies
Qualifications
Required
- 2+ years experience in industrial refrigeration OR maintenance in a cold storage/industrial environment
- Basic mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills
- Strong attention to detail and safety awareness
- Willingness to be on-call for off hours, weekend, & emergency situations
Preferred
- Experience with ammonia (NH3) refrigeration systems
- RETA certification (CARO or CIRO) or equivalent
- Experience in food-grade or 3PL warehouse environments
- Familiarity with PSM / RMP compliance
- Forklift or equipment maintenance experience
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs
- Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, work in confined spaces
- Comfortable working in extreme cold environments for extended periods (-10°F to 40°F)
