POSITION TITLE: SKILLED TRADES – Carpenter - Salary is Negotiable

REPORTS TO: Director of Facilities
OBJECTIVE: Provide for the staff, teachers and students a safe, secure, clean and healthy environment for them to achieve their goals.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Possess a two-year associate’s degree from an accredited vocational school or equivalent certification from the military or a legitimate apprenticeship program in the specified trade; ability to read, write, type at a high school level.
2. Minimum of three (3) years experience in a school, industrial setting or the military.
3. Self-directed. Ability to perform general preventive maintenance and specific corrective maintenance with minimal supervision.
4. Working knowledge of occupational safety hazards and regulations; ability to read, interpret and apply MSDA/GHS Sheets.
5. Ability to establish written documentation and the enter information into computerized record keeping systems.
6. Ability to perform multiple general maintenance tasks and apply specific maintenance knowledge in the area of expertise noted.
7. Proven general ability plumbing, including but not limited to, water/gas/steam systems, general pipe fitting, replacing of plumbing fixtures, etc.
8. Proven general welding (MIG/TIG/Stick) and sheet metal fabrication with steel, stainless, and aluminum; proven general construction and fabrication ability.
9. Proven ability to read and interpret installation diagrams, schematic drawings and manufacturer's specifications; ability to read and interpret manufacturer's operating maintenance and repair instructions.
10. Can operate backhoe, dump truck, and replace water lines, etc, throughout the District.
11. Additional verifiable skills in one or more of the following vocational fields: painting, masonry, welding, grounds keeping.
12. Possess necessary hand tools to maintain or repair a variety of equipment; proven aptitude in the use of hand tools necessary for this trade.
13. Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License.
14. Qualified to maintain mechanical grounds keeping equipment throughout the District or proven, equivalent, prior experience.
15. Ability to perform all essential functions of the position with or without accommodation.
16. Ability to lift 50 lbs.; ability to work from elevated platform/ladder up to 25 ft.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, PRIMARY:
1. Assembles, installs, and repairs a variety of equipment and fixtures common to school buildings and grounds.
2. Completes general, basic, repairs and replaces motors and pumps of all sizes.
3. Operates boilers and heating systems; tests systems and assists with tear down and replacement.
4. Installs, repairs and replaces pipes, drains, and plumbing fixtures (spigots, drinking fountains, etc.) in all District facilities.
5. Completes repairs to metal lockers, door and chairs throughout the District.
6. Completes repairs to kitchen including, but not limited, to: ovens, fryers, warmers, etc.
7. Sets up and tears down for all athletic events, graduation and carnival.
8. Meets assigned schedules and reports to work on times specified; remains for the scheduled period of time.
9. Assists in the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields including playing surfaces and cutting team areas/structures, game-related equipment (goals, fences, etc.); lays out and paints lines on athletic fields in accordance with game rules and specifications.
10. Performs other duties as directed by the Directors of Facilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, SECONDARY (also during inclement weather):
1. Prepares all outdoor and athletic equipment for use, service and storage.
2. Assists with District-wide snow removal from sidewalks and driveways.
3. Completes preventative maintenance as assigned on pumps, heating units, refrigeration units, boilers, and mechanical equipment.
4. Conducts visual inspections of equipment and facilities in compliance with preventative maintenance programs.
5. Assists with grass cutting as needed and assigned by the supervisor.
6. Performs such general maintenance tasks as may be assigned including, but not limited, to: routine HVAC, electrical, carpentry, painting and boiler work. Includes:
· Roof repairs.
· Painting interior/exterior facilities
· Reglazing and repairing windows.
· Patching plaster and repairing ceilings and tile floors.
· Repair concrete/hard surface areas, sidewalks, fences, and rails.
· Maintain storm sewers, catch basins, and sanitary sewers.
· Repairing electrical systems, masonry installations, and motor vehicles.
· Conduct periodic inspections and tests of electrical installations along with electrician in schools to ensure their safe condition.
· Assist custodial staff when directed.
· Become familiar and proficient in door hardware and key cutting.
ERGONOMICS:

Walking – Stairs: 5% of the workday
Bending: 5% of the workday
Lifting: 10% of the workday
0 – 10 lbs. 50% of the time lifting is occurring.
11 – 20 lbs. 20% of the time lifting is occurring.
21 – 30 lbs. 20% of the time lifting is occurring.
31 + lbs. 10% of the time lifting is occurring.
NOTE: Individual must be capable of working on rooftops and heights of varying degree. Ability to climb ladders and work in lifting equipment as required.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Twelve-month work year. Wages and conditions of employment as specified in Agreement between the West Mifflin Areas School District. 12 months/261-day work year; 5 days per week, 8 hours per day including ½ hour paid lunch, Pre-employment Pennsylvania Criminal record check, Child Abuse Clearance, Mandated Reporter Certificate and FBI Fingerprint Clearance required; physical and TB test requirements as mandated by the Pennsylvania Public School Code of 1949 as amended.
EVALUATION:
New employees and internal bidders who pass the performance standards of this job will be evaluated semi-annually in accordance with the Board’s policy on evaluation of non-certificated personnel
