Senior Technical Install Specialist (HVAC/R)
Location: Conroe / Montgomery County, TX (field-based)
Company: Carl’s Quality Cooling & Heating
About Us
Carl’s Quality Cooling & Heating is a fast-growing, service-first HVAC contractor serving Montgomery County and surrounding areas. We pride ourselves on technical excellence, best-in-class customer service, and investing in people and training. We’re looking for a Senior Technical Installer who loves complex technical work, commissions high-performance systems, and mentors a growing team of technicians.
Role Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled, experienced Senior Technical Installer with deep, hands-on experience installing and commissioning high-efficiency, communicating, variable-speed, inverter-driven residential and light-commercial systems. The ideal candidate has proven experience with Daikin FIT, Amana Series S, Goodman Side-Discharge, dedicated experience with mini-splits / multi-splits, and full competency with VRV/VRF systems (installation, controls, and commissioning). This role is field-heavy and requires excellent troubleshooting skills, strong customer communication, and the ability to document and deliver quality installations every time.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform complete installations of split systems, heat pumps, inverter-driven condensing units and compressors, ducted and ductless mini-splits, multi-splits, and VRV/VRF systems per manufacturer specifications and local code.
- Commission and start-up communicating systems (Daikin FIT, Amana Series S, Goodman Side-Discharge) — configure and verify inverter controls, variable speed operation, and factory/field settings.
- Commission VRV/VRF systems: piping pulls, evacuation, charging, electronic expansion valve setup, branch selector valves, remote controllers, and networked control integration.
- Program, configure, and troubleshoot manufacturer control platforms, apps and PC commissioning tools (e.g., Daikin commissioning tools, supplier mobile apps).
- Perform refrigerant handling: nitrogen purging, brazing, vacuuming, recovery, accurate weighing and charging, leak detection, and verify superheat/subcooling values.
- Troubleshoot inverter/compressor faults, communication faults, electronic expansion valve issues, and control/board level problems.
- Read and follow blueprints, wiring diagrams, and submittals. Perform site surveys and pre-installation planning including load/line sizing, condensate management, and structural requirements.
- Interface professionally with customers onsite to explain work performed, system operation, and maintenance best practices.
- Complete accurate job documentation: commissioning checklists, start-up reports, punch lists, warranty paperwork, and job photos.
- Mentor junior technicians, lead job sites where appropriate, and coordinate with project managers and supply chain for parts and spares.
- Maintain on-vehicle inventory of tools and materials, keep tools and truck organized, and follow company safety procedures.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- 7+ years of hands-on HVAC/R installation and commissioning experience (residential and light commercial). Strong preference for candidates with long track record on inverter-driven and communicating systems.
- Proven experience installing and commissioning: Daikin FIT, Amana Series S, Goodman Side-Discharge, mini-splits / multi-splits, and VRV/VRF systems — cite specific jobs/projects in resume.
- Advanced understanding of inverter/variable speed compressor technology, VFDs, variable capacity control, and electronic expansion valves.
- Strong refrigeration fundamentals: brazing, nitrogen purging, vacuum to spec, accurate charging (by weight and performance), superheat/subcooling measurement and interpretation.
- Solid electrical skills: 120V–480V single and three-phase circuits, motor/contactor/relay troubleshooting, control wiring, and protective devices.
- EPA Section 608 Universal Certification required.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Excellent customer communication and team leadership skills.
- Ability to climb ladders, crawl in attics, lift up to 75 lbs, and work in confined spaces and varying weather conditions.
Preferred / Highly Desirable
- Manufacturer certifications: Daikin, Amana/Goodman, or other VRF/mini-split vendor training and commissioning credentials.
- NATE certification or equivalent.
- Experience integrating HVAC systems with building controls/BMS (BACnet, Modbus) or proprietary networked controllers.
- Experience commissioning communicating thermostats, Wi-Fi controllers, and mobile/PC commissioning apps.
- Formal HVAC/R technical training, apprenticeship, or journeyman level experience.
Tools & Equipment Familiarity
- Digital manifold gauges, electronic vacuum pumps, micron gauges, refrigerant scales, recovery units, digital clamp meters, multimeters, leak detectors, brazing torches, flaring tools, tubing tools, nitrogen regulators, and commissioning/diagnostic software.
