Overview:
ESI is seeking an experienced Lead Custom Metal Fabricator (HVAC) to oversee the fabrication of custom HVAC ductwork and specialty metal components. This role is hands-on and leadership-focused, responsible for quality, efficiency, and mentoring shop personnel while coordinating closely with project managers and field teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the fabrication of custom HVAC ductwork, fittings, and specialty metal components
- Read and interpret shop drawings, blueprints, and specifications
- Operate and oversee use of fabrication equipment (shear, brake, plasma table, roll former, etc.)
- Measure, layout, and precision-cut various gauges of sheet metal—including galvanized steel, aluminum, black iron, and stainless steel—while maintaining a strict zero-waste standard
- Fabricate custom curb adapters, kitchen grease ducts, laboratory plenums, and high-performance fume hoods
- Ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance with project requirements and SMACNA standards
- Supervise and train shop fabricators; assign daily work and set production priorities
- Perform airtight joining using MIG/TIG welding, soldering, and riveting to meet 2026 SMACNA standards
- Coordinate material needs and schedules with project management and field crews
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment
- Inspect finished products and resolve fabrication issues as needed
- Support continuous improvement in shop processes and workflow
Qualifications
- 5+ years of HVAC metal fabrication experience (custom and commercial preferred)
- Previous lead, foreman, or supervisory experience strongly preferred
- Advanced knowledge of welding (MIG/TIG) on various alloys and expert-level manual layout skills for compound fittings
- Strong knowledge of HVAC ductwork fabrication and installation practices
- Ability to read and interpret shop drawings and blueprints
- Proficiency with shop fabrication equipment
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
