Home Energy Auditor Job Description
The Home Energy Auditor works directly with residential customers to evaluate home energy performance, with a primary focus on HVAC system efficiency, comfort, safety, and cost savings. This role conducts in-home assessments, reviews energy usage patterns, identifies inefficiencies, and provides practical recommendations to improve system performance and overall home energy efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct residential home energy audits to assess HVAC efficiency, insulation, air leakage, ventilation, and overall system performance.
- Inspect heating and cooling equipment, ductwork, thermostats, filters, and related components to identify operational or efficiency issues.
- Use diagnostic tools such as blower doors, combustion analyzers, infrared cameras, and airflow testing equipment as needed.
- Review utility usage and homeowner concerns to identify trends related to comfort, energy waste, or high operating costs.
- Document findings and prepare clear, accurate audit reports with prioritized recommendations.
- Explain audit results to homeowners in a professional, easy-to-understand manner and answer questions about proposed improvements.
- Recommend corrective actions, maintenance items, repairs, upgrades, or replacement options based on audit findings.
- Identify health and safety concerns related to HVAC operation, combustion safety, ventilation, moisture, or indoor air quality.
- Maintain accurate records, photos, measurements, and program documentation in accordance with company or client requirements.
- Stay current on residential energy efficiency standards, utility programs, rebate opportunities, and industry best practices.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or technical training in HVAC, building science, energy management, or a related field preferred.
- Experience in residential HVAC, home performance, energy auditing, weatherization, or a related field.
- Working knowledge of residential heating, cooling, air distribution, insulation, and ventilation systems.
- Ability to identify system inefficiencies and recommend practical, customer-focused solutions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical findings clearly.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to customer homes within the assigned service area.
- Ability to use a computer or tablet for reporting, scheduling, and documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
- BPI certification, RESNET certification, or other home energy auditing credentials.
- HVAC certification or hands-on field service experience.
- Experience using energy modeling or audit software.
- Knowledge of local utility incentive programs, rebate programs, or residential energy efficiency standards.
- OSHA or other safety-related training.

- Must follow all applicable safety procedures while performing inspections and diagnostic testing.
