Principal Duties
The principal duties of the Yard Manager
Oversee all day-to-day yard operations including purchasing, material processing, shipping, equipment maintenance (with special attention to the shredder and downstream systems), and facility upkeep. Ensure the yard is clean, organized, safe, and free of trash or material on roadways at all times.
Purchase all scrap metal from pedestrian and commercial customers
Personally inspect incoming loads, verify accurate grading and downgrades, and ensure scale staff follow proper ticketing and photo procedures.
Manage, schedule, train, and discipline all yard personnel, including shredder operators and staff. Cross-train employees and develop backups for all key positions.
Maintain inventory at optimal levels, ensure fast turnover, proper bin labeling, and secure storage to minimize theft.
Conduct daily safety meetings, weekly toolbox talks, and monthly safety training sessions. Enforce 100% PPE compliance, maintain an industry-leading safety record, and ensure all staff complete required monthly safety training.
Schedule and supervise all equipment maintenance, with particular focus on the shredder and related systems; ensure daily inspections are completed and recorded in the Fleet Maintenance system, and address any shredder-specific concerns promptly.
Operate heavy machinery (front-end loaders, material handlers, excavators, etc.) as needed to support yard operations, maintain flow, load/unload materials, or cover for absent operators while prioritizing safety.
Approve all yard invoices and purchase orders before submission to accounting.
Prepare and ship all outbound loads ensuring accurate weights, proper labeling, and material matches the description on the bill of lading.
Monitor and control overtime, customer count, average truck weights, and other key metrics to meet or exceed budgeted targets.
Conduct regular yard audits, equipment checks (including shredder performance and safety features), and housekeeping inspections.
Complete monthly commission/incentive sheets on time with specific feedback for each employee.
Foster positive customer and vendor relationships while maximizing material value and yard efficiency.
