High Voltage Apparatus Specialist
Location
Indianapolis, IN (must reside within 60 miles of the office)
Schedule
Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:30pm
Occasional overtime, nights, weekends, holidays, and overnight travel as needed
Overview
This is a hands-on electrical power industry role focused on the inspection, testing, maintenance, repair, and reconditioning of low, medium, and high-voltage electrical apparatus. You will work primarily in a shop environment while supporting field projects as needed. If you enjoy troubleshooting complex electrical equipment, working with specialized test equipment, and solving technical problems, this role offers a variety of challenging work and opportunities for professional certification and growth.
What you will do
Electrical testing and maintenance
- Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, recondition, rebuild, retrofit, and test electrical apparatus
- Service 480V-72kV air, vacuum, and SF6 circuit breakers
- Service 138kV-550kV SF6 circuit breakers and circuit switchers
- Service reclosers, regulators, sectionalizers, and transformers
- Perform preventative maintenance, upgrades, repairs, and equipment testing
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, manuals, and technical drawings
Testing and diagnostics
- Operate specialized test equipment including:
- Primary and secondary current injection test sets
- Insulation analyzers
- Contact resistance meters
- Multimeters and clamp-on ammeters
- Breaker time and travel analyzers
- Power factor test sets
- CT analyzers
- Diagnose complex electrical and mechanical issues
- Document equipment conditions and repairs using photos, diagrams, and reports
Documentation and project support
- Complete PEARL documentation accurately and on time
- Submit testing results through PowerDB
- Support project planning, scheduling, execution, and cost management efforts
- Maintain tools, vehicles, and testing equipment in proper working condition
- Follow all safety requirements and use appropriate personal protective equipment
May be modified from time to time. Other duties, tasks, and work may be assigned.

- Testing and maintenance activities are completed safely and accurately
- Equipment issues are identified, diagnosed, and resolved efficiently
- Documentation and test reports are completed on time with minimal errors
- Projects stay on schedule and support customer expectations
- Tools, equipment, and vehicles remain organized, calibrated, and ready for use
- Safety procedures and industry standards are consistently followed
What we are looking for
- Minimum 3 years of experience in electrical testing, construction, maintenance, commissioning, or a related power industry field
- Experience working with low, medium, and high-voltage electrical apparatus
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to read and understand electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
- Familiarity with NETA, PEARL, NFPA 70E, OSHA, and DOT standards
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office, email, and data entry
- Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and work independently
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- PowerDB experience is a plus
- Familiarity with SF6 apparatus is a plus
- Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Electrical/Electronic Technology or military electrical experience is preferred but not required
Certifications and training
Must be willing and able to obtain:
- NETA Level II within 12 months
- PEARL Level I within 12 months
- PEARL Level II within 24 months
- OSHA 10-Hour Certification
- NFPA 70E Training
- CPR Certification
Company-paid training is provided where applicable.
Physical and work requirements
- Ability to lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds
- Ability to work near energized electrical substations while following established safety procedures
- Valid driver's license required
- CDL preferred or willingness to obtain the required driving endorsement
- Ability to pass background, motor vehicle, drug, and alcohol screening requirements
- Must be willing to travel overnight on occasion for multi-day projects
