We are seeking a skilled and dependable On-Call HVAC Technician to diagnose, repair, install, and maintain heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems for residential, commercial, and/or industrial customers.
The ideal candidate is technically proficient, customer-focused, safety-conscious, and available to respond to emergency service requests outside of normal business hours. This position requires independent field work, strong troubleshooting skills, and the ability to provide professional service under time-sensitive conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond promptly to assigned emergency and after-hours HVAC service calls.
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration systems.
- Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, refrigerant, airflow, thermostat, and control-system issues.
- Perform preventative maintenance and system inspections.
- Install, replace, and repair HVAC components, including:
- Compressors
- Motors and fans
- Capacitors
- Contactors and relays
- Thermostats and controls
- Filters and belts
- Ductwork and dampers
- Refrigerant lines and related components
- Test system performance and verify that equipment is operating safely and efficiently.
- Handle refrigerants in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and company procedures.
- Explain repair recommendations and service options clearly to customers, property managers, or site representatives.
- Prepare accurate service reports, invoices, equipment records, and customer documentation.
- Maintain service vehicles, tools, parts, equipment, and inventory.
- Follow all company safety policies, manufacturer specifications, and applicable building and mechanical codes.
- Maintain a clean and professional work area at each job site.
- Coordinate with dispatch, supervisors, contractors, and other technicians as needed.
- Participate in an on-call rotation and remain available during assigned shifts.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous HVAC service or maintenance experience.
- Ability to diagnose and repair residential, commercial, or industrial HVAC systems.
- EPA Section 608 certification required for positions involving refrigerant handling.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
- Basic knowledge of electrical systems, motors, controls, refrigeration cycles, and HVAC safety procedures.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, meters, gauges, and diagnostic equipment.
- Strong communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screening, if required.
Preferred Qualifications
- HVAC trade school, technical training, or apprenticeship completion.
- State or local HVAC license or certification.
- Experience with emergency or after-hours service calls.
- Experience servicing commercial rooftop units, split systems, heat pumps, boilers, chillers, package units, or refrigeration equipment.
- NATE certification or other recognized HVAC credentials.
- Experience with building automation systems and computerized service documentation.
- OSHA or other workplace safety training.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to climb ladders, work from lifts, and access rooftops, crawl spaces, attics, mechanical rooms, and confined areas.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and work overhead for extended periods.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to respond to urgent service needs during nights, weekends, holidays, or other nonstandard hours.
- Ability to safely operate a company vehicle and transport tools and equipment.
On-Call Requirements
- Participate in an established on-call rotation.
- Remain reachable and available during assigned on-call periods.
- Respond to emergency HVAC issues within the company’s required response time.
- Work evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours when necessary.
- Maintain appropriate tools, safety equipment, parts, and communication devices for emergency response.
- Provide timely updates to dispatch, management, and customers regarding service status.
