Lead Carpenter

Avonteer Homes — Manchester / Dorset, Vermont | Full-time, in person | $40–48/hour based on experience

About us

Avonteer Homes is a residential construction practice in Manchester and Dorset, Vermont. We serve residential clients.

Our work is walnut, honed stone, marble, wide-plank oak, shiplap ceilings. The finish is the point.

The role

You own the finish end of a project — from rough-in through a signed-off punch list. You set the standard on trim, casework, tile, and millwork, and you direct one or two carpenters on your project day to day. You report directly to the owner and you'll be in front of clients regularly.

This is a small operation. There's no layer between you and the homeowner, and no layer between you and the work.

What you'll do

Lay out and execute finish carpentry from drawings — trim, doors, casework, built-ins, ceilings
Direct 1–3 carpenters on your project and hold their work to the same standard as your own
Investigate before demolition: open things up carefully, find out what's actually behind the wall, and tell us early
Work to a defined scope. When something falls outside it, flag it as a change order before the work happens — not after
Take a punch list to actually done, not to 95%
Keep the site clean and the client comfortable, often while the family is still living in the house
Read plans, catch problems in them, and raise them in planning rather than in the field

What we need

7+ years residential carpentry, with real finish work in your history
Photos of finish work you did yourself — trim, casework, tile. Not a company portfolio
You've closed out punch lists as the person responsible for them
You've worked in occupied homes with the family present
You show up on the day and time we agreed to. We publish start dates to clients; that promise is only as good as the crew
You tell us bad news early
Based in Vermont or the immediate area
Valid driver's license and dependable transportation

Helpful but not required

Experience running one to three people
Tile and stone setting
Estimating or pricing finish scopes
Experience with older Vermont homes, timber framing, or custom millwork
OSHA 10 or 30

Not a fit if

Your framing is strong but your trim is rough
You work fast at the expense of the finish
You wait to be told what's next

Compensation and benefits

$40–48/hour depending on experience, paid weekly every Friday
Overtime per Vermont law
401(k) with company match up to 4% of gross pay
40 hours PTO and 40 hours paid sick time accrued annually
Consistent year-round work with a full project pipeline
