Skilled Fabricator

L&L Incorporated is seeking a skilled fabricator to support our in-house production of commercial stair, railing, structural and architectural metal systems. This role is hands-on and critical to maintaining quality, consistency, and production schedules. The ideal candidate is reliable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced fabrication shop.
Key Responsibilities
Metal Fabrication & Assembly
- Fabricate structural and architectural metal components including stair stringers, landings, guardrails, handrails, and custom assemblies.
- Read and interpret shop drawings, field measurements, and fabrication details.
- Cut, fit, weld, grind, and assemble steel and aluminum components to specification.
- Maintain tight tolerances and consistent fit-up for repeatable production.
- Perform both one-off custom fabrication and small-batch production work.
Welding & Finishing
- Execute MIG welding (GMAW) and TIG welding.
- Produce structurally sound, visually clean welds suitable for exposed architectural applications.
- Grind, prep, and finish welds based on project requirements.
- Assist with surface prep for galvanizing, powder coating, or paint.
- Identify and correct defects prior to QC sign-off.
Quality Control & Production Standards
- Self-inspect work for accuracy, quality, and compliance with drawings.
- Flag design or constructability issues before fabrication progresses.
- Support production improvements to reduce rework and fabrication time.
Equipment & Operational Oversight
Operate and supervise safe use of:
- Band saws
- Ironworkers
- Drill presses
- Welding machines (MIG/TIG)
- Grinders and finishing equipment
- Oversee material staging and workflow efficiency.
- Maintain organized workstations and enforce material labeling standards.
- Assist with material takeoffs and staging for install crews.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all shop safety protocols and PPE requirements.
- Support OSHA-compliant work practices.
- Maintain a clean, organized work area to reduce safety risks.
- Report unsafe conditions or equipment issues immediately.
Collaboration & Communication
- Coordinate with drafting/design team to clarify details before fabrication.
- Work closely with Production Manager to meet schedules and priorities.
- Communicate fabrication status and constraints clearly.
- Support cross-training and mentorship of junior fabricators as needed.
Qualifications & Skills
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Trade school or formal welding/fabrication training preferred.
Experience
- 3+ years of hands-on metal fabrication experience preferred.
- Prior experience with structural or architectural metals required.
- Multi-housing, commercial, or renovation work experience strongly preferred.
Technical Proficiency
- Proficient in MIG welding and TIG welding.
- Ability to read and work from shop drawings and fabrication details.
- Experience fabricating stairs, rails, and guard systems preferred.
- Familiarity with steel and aluminum materials.
