The HVAC Service Technician is responsible for diagnosing, servicing, repairing, and maintaining residential and commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. This role requires strong technical expertise, customer service skills, and the ability to work independently while delivering safe, high-quality service.
Position Summary
The Install Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the HVAC installation department, ensuring installation teams have the leadership, training, tools, materials, equipment, and resources needed to complete projects safely, efficiently, and to Big Horn Heating & Cooling standards.
This position manages installation crews, project scheduling, estimating, sheet metal fabrication, production, quality control, job profitability, material coordination, customer satisfaction, safety, and departmental performance.
The Install Manager serves as a key connection between customers, installers, project management, sales, warehouse, office personnel, subcontractors, and company leadership. The ideal candidate is an experienced HVAC installation professional and leader who understands both the technical and business aspects of residential and/or commercial HVAC installation.
Essential ResponsibilitiesInstallation Department Management
- Oversee daily operations of the HVAC installation department.
- Manage, coach, and support installation crews, lead installers, and apprentices.
- Monitor crew performance, productivity, efficiency, workmanship, and customer service.
- Ensure installation projects are completed accurately, professionally, safely, and within expected timelines.
- Establish and maintain department procedures, standards, and expectations.
- Ensure installation teams have the tools, equipment, materials, information, and resources necessary to perform their work effectively.
- Coordinate with management regarding staffing, workload, scheduling, and departmental needs.
- Identify operational issues and implement solutions to improve installation performance.
- Manage backlog of work with 2 weeks to look ahead.
Installation Scheduling & Production
- Work closely with the General Manager , sales, dispatch, warehouse, and office personnel to maintain an efficient installation schedule.
- Provide estimates for projects
- Review upcoming installation projects and ensure crews are appropriately assigned based on skill level, project complexity, location, and workload.
- Perform project management duties for all projects
- Monitor project progress and address delays, scheduling conflicts, material shortages, or staffing issues.
- Ensure installation crews have all necessary equipment, materials, permits, plans, and job information before beginning work.
- Coordinate projects requiring multiple crews, subcontractors, specialized equipment, or additional resources.
- Monitor open installation projects through completion.
- Ensure projects remain on schedule and communicate changes or delays to appropriate personnel and customers.
Installer Leadership & Development
- Conduct regular one-on-one meetings and performance discussions with installation employees.
- Identify training needs and coordinate technical and professional development.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and corrective feedback when necessary.
- Support onboarding and training of new installers and apprentices.
- Develop installation employees through structured training, field coaching, and hands-on development.
- Promote accountability, teamwork, professionalism, and a strong customer-service culture.
- Lead by example in safety, technical knowledge, communication, quality, and work ethic.
- Identify high-potential employees and assist with career development and advancement opportunities.
Installation Quality Control
- Review completed installation projects for workmanship, accuracy, and compliance with company standards.
- Ensure HVAC equipment is installed according to manufacturer specifications, approved plans, applicable codes, and company requirements.
- Monitor installation callbacks, warranty issues, punch-list items, and customer complaints.
- Conduct or coordinate quality-control inspections when necessary.
- Identify recurring installation issues and develop corrective action plans.
- Ensure installations are completed correctly the first time.
- Verify that required documentation, startup procedures, commissioning, and customer turnover requirements are completed.
- Work with service personnel when installation issues require follow-up or correction.
Customer Service
- Maintain a high level of customer satisfaction throughout the installation process.
- Respond to escalated customer concerns and work toward timely, professional resolutions.
- Ensure installation crews communicate professionally and respectfully with customers.
- Ensure job sites are maintained in a clean, safe, and professional condition.
- Follow up on customer concerns, punch-list items, and warranty-related issues.
- Support the development of long-term customer relationships.
- Represent Big Horn Heating & Cooling professionally at customer homes, businesses, and job sites.
Sales, Production & Profitability
- Monitor installation department revenue, gross profit, labor efficiency, production hours, material costs, callbacks, and other key performance indicators.
- Identify opportunities to improve installation profitability and efficiency.
- Review installation scopes of work and identify potential labor, material, or production concerns.
- Work with the General Manager and Sales team regarding project pricing, scope changes, scheduling, and production expectations.
- Monitor labor hours against estimated production hours.
- Identify and communicate change-order opportunities or scope discrepancies.
- Help ensure installation projects are completed within approved budgets.
- Review completed projects to identify opportunities for improved estimating, production, and profitability.
- Support company growth by developing efficient and scalable installation processes.
Materials, Vehicles & Equipment
- Monitor installation vehicle inventory and equipment.
- Ensure installation vehicles are properly stocked, maintained, clean, and organized.
- Coordinate ordering and replenishment of installation materials and commonly used supplies.
- Work with warehouse personnel to ensure materials are available when needed.
- Verify materials are properly allocated to installation projects.
- Monitor company tools and equipment and ensure they are properly maintained and accounted for.
- Identify equipment or tool needs that could improve productivity and safety.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce company safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure installation crews follow OSHA requirements, applicable HVAC codes, manufacturer requirements, and company safety standards.
- Monitor proper use of PPE, tools, vehicles, ladders, lifting equipment, and other job-site equipment.
- Conduct or participate in safety meetings and toolbox talks.
- Address unsafe work practices immediately.
- Report accidents, incidents, injuries, and safety concerns according to company procedures.
- Maintain required safety documentation and records.
- Promote a culture where employees understand that safety is a responsibility shared by everyone.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Review installer timecards, job notes, installation documentation, project paperwork, and other department records.
- Monitor and approve installation-related paperwork as required.
- Maintain accurate records of employee performance, training, disciplinary actions, certifications, and licenses.
- Participate in management meetings and provide regular updates regarding installation department performance.
- Assist with forecasting staffing, equipment, materials, and operational needs.
- Track department KPIs and communicate performance trends to company leadership.
- Assist with budgeting and planning for the installation department.
QualificationsRequired
- 8+ years of HVAC installation experience or equivalent technical experience.
- Previous project management experience, including estimating and creating bids.
- Previous supervisory, lead installer, foreman, or management experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of residential and/or commercial HVAC installation.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC equipment, installation methods, troubleshooting, and system operation.
- Ability to read and understand HVAC plans, equipment specifications, wiring diagrams, installation manuals, and technical documentation.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass applicable background and employment screening requirements.
Preferred
- HVAC/R certification or trade-school education.
- EPA 608 certification.
- Journeyman HVAC license or applicable state/local certification.
- NATE certification or other industry credentials.
- Experience with residential and commercial HVAC installation.
- Experience with hydronic, boiler, airside controls, or other specialized HVAC systems.
- Experience managing installation department KPIs and profitability.
- Experience using project management, CRM, dispatch, or service-management software.
- Experience with new construction HVAC projects.
- Experience managing multiple installation crews.

Travel Requirements
Travel between company locations and job sites may be required.
Estimated Travel: Travel between Idaho Falls and Jackson, WY and other company/job-site locations, depending on assigned territory and operational needs.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, climb, and move throughout an office, warehouse, and job-site environment.
- Ability to assist installation crews in the field when necessary.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to safely access mechanical rooms, rooftops, crawl spaces, attics, construction sites, and other HVAC work environments when required.
- Ability to work in varying temperatures and environmental conditions.

Work Environment
This position operates in a combination of office, warehouse, vehicle, customer, construction, and job-site environments.
The Install Manager may occasionally be required to work outside normal business hours to address installation scheduling issues, staffing needs, customer escalations, project requirements, or operational needs.
