Job Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Facilities, the Maintenance Tech – Plumber performs advanced skilled work in the inspection, troubleshooting, installation, repair, and preventive maintenance of campus plumbing and heating systems and equipment. This position serves as the plumbing and heating specialist for the maintenance team and supports general facilities maintenance as needed. Plumbing work is performed within the scope of the employee’s license, qualifications, and company authorization, with required permits, inspections, and supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain commercial/building plumbing and heating systems, including water supply, drainage, waste, and vent piping, fixtures, valves, heating boilers and air handlers and related equipment.
- Diagnose and correct leaks, clogged drains, low water pressure, malfunctioning fixtures, and other plumbing problems.
- Cut, fit, assemble, and join piping using appropriate methods, including soldering copper pipe, threading, and approved mechanical or solvent-weld connections.
- Repair and replace faucets, toilets, sinks, flush valves, shutoff valves, and other plumbing components, obtaining required permits and inspections before proceeding.
- Perform preventive maintenance and inspections of plumbing systems, water heaters, pumps, and related equipment within the employee’s qualifications and authorized scope.
- Read plumbing drawings, equipment manuals, and work orders; identify required materials and plan repairs to minimize disruption to campus operations.
- Follow applicable Massachusetts plumbing codes, OSHA requirements, and company safety procedures, including hot-work precautions, isolation of water and energy sources, and use of appropriate protective equipment.
- Respond to urgent plumbing issues, isolate affected systems when safe, and promptly report hazards, water damage, or additional repair needs to the Director of Facilities.
- Document inspections, repairs, and materials used in the Facilities Management system; assist with coordinating contractors, permits, and required inspections.
- Provide technical guidance to maintenance staff within applicable licensing and supervision requirements; support general facilities repairs and event setups and teardowns as assigned.
- Work collaboratively with building administrators and staff to maintain a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Required Qualifications (knowledge, skills, abilities):
- Valid and current Massachusetts Journeyman Plumber or Master Plumber license, maintained throughout employment.
- Demonstrated skilled experience troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining commercial/building plumbing and heating systems.
- Hands-on experience soldering copper piping and using appropriate pipe cutting, fitting, joining, and repair techniques.
- Ability to diagnose leaks, drain blockages, pressure problems, and fixture or valve failures and complete effective repairs.
- Knowledge of applicable Massachusetts plumbing codes, permit requirements, and OSHA safety requirements.
- Ability to safely use plumbing tools, drain-clearing equipment, soldering equipment, and protective equipment.
- Ability to read plumbing drawings and manuals, work independently, prioritize assignments, and communicate effectively with coworkers and site staff.
- Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing in English to understand safety instructions, communicate work needs, and maintain records.
- Valid driver’s license when driving is required for assigned duties.
- Basic computer skills to complete service requests and document work in the Facilities Management system.
Preferred education and experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience maintaining plumbing systems in schools, campuses, or other multi-building facilities.
- Experience with commercial water heaters, circulating pumps, and preventive maintenance programs.
- Experience providing technical guidance to a maintenance team.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, including lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds; standing or walking for extended periods; bending, kneeling, and reaching; and working on ladders or lifts and in indoor and outdoor environments. Ability to safely use tools and required protective equipment.

- Must successfully complete required background screening in accordance with applicable law and client-site requirements.

- Must maintain required licensure and complete assigned safety training.
- Gas fitting, backflow testing, and other specialized work may be assigned only when the employee holds any required credentials and is trained and authorized for the task.
Snow and Ice Removal: This position is responsible for performing snow and ice removal as an essential job duty during winter weather conditions. Duties include manual snow removal, shoveling, applying salt or other de-icing materials, and operating tractors, utility vehicles, snowplows, snow blowers, and other snow removal equipment as assigned. Employees must follow all safety procedures and be properly trained and authorized before operating vehicles or equipment.
Pay: $36.00 - $38.00 per hour
