Van Dellen Steel is a privately held corporation located in Dutton, Michigan. Our experienced staff, well equipped facility and tremendous record for meeting even the most difficult contract requirements have allowed us to become a recognized leader in West Michigan for fabricated structural steel since 1968. Currently we are looking for a Welder/Fabricator
This role will be trained, however previous welding experience is a plus. Additional responsibilities include:
Responsibilities
- Read and interpret shop drawings, blueprints, and weld symbols to lay out and fabricate structural steel components accurately
- Fit, tack, and weld structural members including wide-flange beams, HSS tube, angle iron, and plate
- Perform complete joint penetration (CJP) and partial joint penetration (PJP) welds per applicable code requirements
- Lay out, cut, grind, and prepare base metal using grinders and layout tools; maintain dimensional tolerances per drawings
- Assemble and weld connection plates, base plates, end plates, stiffeners, and shear tabs to primary structural members
- Operate overhead cranes and material handling equipment to position and move assemblies safely (training provided)
- Maintain a clean and organized workstation; perform daily equipment checks, report maintenance needs, and follow lockout/tagout procedures
- Collaborate with project leads, QC inspectors, and detailers to resolve fit-up issues and meet production schedules
Qualifications
- 1+ years structural steel fabrication experience
- Proficiency in welding; ability to weld in flat positions
- Current welding certification (or ability to qualify upon hire)
- Ability to read and work from shop drawings and weld symbols
- Proficient use of hand tools, layout tools, grinders, and cutting equipment
- Strong understanding of fit-up, distortion control, and weld quality
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in various positions for extended periods
- Experience with fitting is a plus
