Overview
A well-established, growing commercial HVAC and refrigeration service company in Oakland, Wayne, Livingston, and Washtenaw counties is hiring its Technical Director. This is a working leadership role for a technician who wants to build: you'll run service quality, train and develop a growing tech team, own our SOPs, and serve as the company's licensed Qualifying Officer, while staying in the field where the work happens. We are a service-first shop, restaurants, grocery, commercial kitchens.
Your Day-to-Day
- Run service calls daily, with emphasis on the most technically demanding tickets, escalations, and overflow. This role is field-first: roughly 50 to 70 percent field time in the first year, moderating as the team grows.
- Review and certify completed work orders and invoices for technical accuracy, completeness, and documentation quality before they bill. Your signature is the company's standard.
- Own service quality end to end: audit closed tickets, root-cause every callback and warranty event, and correct process rather than assign blame.
- Train and develop technicians through structured ride-alongs, a weekly hands-on training hour, and written sign-off standards for each skill level. You build the bench.
- Author and maintain the SOP library: diagnostics, refrigerant handling and documentation, closeout standards, truck stock, and safety.
- Serve as Qualifying Officer: hold the license classifications, manage permits and inspections, and own the refrigerant compliance program (EPA 608 logs, recovery records, cylinder tracking).
- Enforce truck stock and inventory standards through regular audits.
- Participate in, and help design, a fair on-call rotation. Nights and weekends are shared, structured, and paid, and the person who designs the rotation is in it.
- Support quoting and estimating on technical scope, and provide field leadership on installation and replacement projects as that side of the business grows.
- Interview technician candidates for technical competence and run new-hire field onboarding.
- Deliver a concise weekly workforce report to ownership: capacity, callbacks, training progress, hiring pipeline.
- Refrigeration-focus highly recommended.
Compensation
- $90,000-$105,000 base range, $10,000 licensure bonus upon QO designation, discretionary year-end bonus, vehicle and phone, clear path to senior leadership in an expanding multi-trade platform.
