TITLE: Senior Service Technician
REPORTS TO: Service Manager
Summary:
The Senior Service Technician is a highly skilled and experienced field technician responsible for
advanced diagnostics, system repairs, and technical leadership in commercial HVACR service
operations. This individual works independently on complex service calls, supports system
commissioning, and acts as a technical mentor for junior technicians and apprentices.
This role requires full capability to perform all duties of a Service Technician, and Service Apprentice,
while also serving as a field leader who ensures high standards of quality, safety, and customer
satisfaction.
Qualifications: In addition to the qualifications listed below, the Senior Service
Technician is expected to meet or exceed the qualifications required for the Service Technician
position.
- Trade school, technical training, or associate degree in HVACR required
- Minimum 5–8 years of hands-on experience in commercial HVACR service
- Proven success in independently handling diagnostics and system repairs
- Experience mentoring and training less experienced technicians
- EPA 608 Universal Certification required
- OSHA 30 required
- Valid driver's license with clean record required
- Manufacturer certifications preferred
- MA Refrigeration Technician License required
- RI Refrigeration Technician License preferred
- Additional trade licenses Advanced understanding of HVACR systems, including refrigeration
cycles, airflow, controls, and diagnostics
- Strong troubleshooting, critical thinking, and mechanical skills
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals
- Leadership and mentorship abilities
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills preferred
Duties & Responsibilities: The following criteria identify duties to describe the
principal functions of the job and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all work
requirements that may be inherent in the position.

Technician job description.
- Independently diagnose and resolve complex issues in HVACR systems including:
o RTUs, chillers, VRFs, VAV systems, split systems, supermarket racks and commercial
refrigeration equipment
o Electrical, controls, airflow, and mechanical faults
- Repair or replace compressors, motors, heat exchangers, coils, and controls
- Perform and supervise refrigerant recovery, evacuation, and charging procedures
- Identify root causes of recurring issues and recommend permanent solutions
- Mentor and support service technicians and apprentices in the field
- Provide on-the-job training in troubleshooting, safety, tools, and documentation
- Communicate regularly with service manager about technician performance and development
- Lead commissioning and startup of new systems including proper operation verification and
control calibration
- Assist with system retrofits and upgrades, including integration with BAS/BMS systems
- Support install teams as needed during equipment replacements and complex startups
- Complete accurate and detailed service reports, including time, materials, diagnostics, and
recommendations
- Communicate findings and recommended solutions clearly to customers, project managers,
and office staff
- Serve as technical liaison between field staff and office/management team
- Enforce and model OSHA safety practices and company protocols on job sites
- Ensure proper use of PPE, tools, and lockout/tagout procedures
- Stay up to date with local code, EPA, and refrigerant handling regulations
Physical Demands & Environmental Conditions:
- Regularly required to sit, walk, stand, bend, crouch, climb, and lift for extended periods
- Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds and use hand and power tools safely
- Required to work indoors and outdoors in extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold,
humidity, rain, and confined spaces such as attics and crawl spaces
- Must have command of all five senses sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. Specific vision
abilities required include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus
- Must have functional vision, hearing, and speech sufficient to conduct business face-to-face
and over the phone
- Must have full range of motion and the ability to use hands, feet, and fingers to handle tools
and equipment
- Typical workweek consists of 8 to 10-hour days, 5 days per week, with occasional weekends,
early mornings, or late evenings as needed
- Must be capable of working in high-stress situations and dealing with aggressive personalities
in a fast-paced industry
