Lead Carpenter – Residential Construction
Rutland Build | Vermont
About Us
We're a Vermont-based construction company that does real work. We specialize in custom home construction, high-end residential renovations, and commercial projects. We're a small team that punches above our weight, and we're building something bigger — a company known for exceptional quality, reliable execution, and a team that's paid well and proud of their work.
We show up. We build things that last. And we're looking for a lead carpenter who operates the same way.
The Role
We need a lead carpenter who can run residential job sites from start to finish — someone who makes decisions, solves problems, and delivers quality work without constant supervision. You'll work directly with our field lead and owner, manage day-to-day site operations, coordinate with subcontractors, and ensure every project meets our standards.
This isn't a babysitting gig. We need someone who shows up ready to work, takes pride in their craft, and can be trusted to do the job right.
What You'll Be Doing
- Lead carpentry work on custom homes, renovations, and remodeling projects
- Frame, trim, finish — the full scope of residential carpentry
- Manage job site progress and keep projects moving on schedule
- Coordinate with subcontractors and communicate with the project manager
- Problem-solve in the field and make smart decisions without hand-holding
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site
- Document daily progress with photos and updates
What We're Looking For
Must-Haves:
- 5+ years of residential carpentry experience (framing, finish work, renovations)
- Proven ability to lead job sites and work independently
- Strong problem-solving skills — you figure things out, you don't wait to be told
- Reliable transportation and your own basic hand tools
- Clean driving record and valid driver's license
- Strong communication skills — you can talk to clients, subs, and the team professionally
- Physical ability to lift 50+ lbs, work on ladders, and handle the demands of the job
Big Pluses:
- Experience with custom home builds and high-end renovations
- Knowledge of Vermont building codes
- Familiarity with project management software (we use Houzz Pro)
- OSHA 10 or 30 certification
What We Offer
- Competitive pay based on experience and skill level
- Consistent, year-round work — we stay busy
- Small team environment where your work matters
- Opportunity to grow with a company that's scaling up
- Work on interesting, high-quality projects (not cookie-cutter builds)
- Direct access to ownership — no endless corporate layers
Who You Are
You're a craftsman who takes pride in your work. You're reliable — when you say you'll be there, you're there. You can work independently but also communicate well with a team. You're not just looking for a paycheck; you want to build something you're proud of and be part of a company that's going somewhere.
You don't need to be told what to do twice. You see what needs to happen and you make it happen.

- Your resume or a summary of your work history
